The invention provides a vacuum interrupter with improved separation of functional elements. The interrupter includes separable contacts for carrying continuous current and rod electrode arrays for carrying fault currents. The housing for the interrupter is evacuated, and has a plurality of interior chambers. The rod electrodes are in one chamber and the separable contacts are in an adjacent chamber. A communicating opening is provided between the chambers. The rod electrodes and separable contacts are connected in parallel in a common circuit. When the contacts are separated, arcing products are conveyed to the adjacent chamber through the communicating opening to initiate arcing between the rod electrodes.

A triggered vacuum gap tube includes an evacuated envelope with high voltage terminals at opposite ends of the envelope. The envelope is divided into two chambers by a mid-plate therein having a centrally located aperture therethrough. The first of the two chambers has an end plate mounting one of the high voltage terminals and also mounting an array of rods or electrodes which extend inwardly toward the mid-plate. The second of the two chambers also has an end plate mounting the other high voltage terminal and also having an array of rods or electrodes extending therefrom toward the mid-plate. The mid-plate has mounted therein an array of through rods or electrodes which extend in one direction into the first chamber and in the opposite direction into the second chamber. The through mid-plate mounted electrodes lie in side-by-side spaced relation with the end plate mounted electrodes in both the first and second chambers. The end plate mounted arrays of electrodes have a centrally disposed electrode with a tip which is proximate to the centrally located aperture in the mid-plate. A plasma trigger is mounted in the tip of one of the centrally disposed electrodes. When a high voltage is connected across the high voltage terminals and a trigger signal is applied to the plasma trigger, a high arc current transits the electrodes and the evacuated spaces therebetween in both the first and second chambers. The arc current occurs substantially simultaneously and has the same magnitude in both chambers.

A vacuum-type circuit interrupter comprises two pluralities of rod electrodes positioned to form a ring of electrodes in which the electrodes of the first plurality interleave with those of the second plurality and are spaced circumferentially of the ring from the immediately adjacent electrodes of the second plurality. A first generally stationary contact is supported on said first support structure in a position intermediate the locations at which the first support structure is attached to said predetermined rod electrodes of said second plurality. Second conductive support structure extends transversely of the rod electrodes and is attached to the distal ends of predetermined rod electrodes of said first plurality. A second generally stationary contact is supported on said second support structure in a position intermediate the locations at which the second support structure is attached to said predetermined rod electrodes of said second plurality. First and second movable contacts are provided for respectively engaging the first and second generally stationary contacts. A first movable contact rod on which the first contact is mounted extends in sealed relationship through said first metal end cap. A second movable contact rod on which said second contact is mounted extends in sealed relationship through said second metal end cap. The two pairs of engageable contacts are electrically connected in parallel with each other while the interrupter is closed.
