The invention relates to a tap changer for the interruption-free switchover between winding taps of a tap-changing transformer. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a novel vacuum interrupter which is particularly suitable for such a tap changer. The tap changer according to the invention is based on the general concept of combining in each case one main contact (V1) and one mechanical switching means (U1), connected in series therewith, of a first load branch and an additional resistive contact (V3) of a second load branch in only a single vacuum interrupter (1) with a common housing (5). In the present invention as above, the structure of a circuit breaker is simplified and moving speeds of the movable electrodes are increased since the movable electrodes move by using induced current generated by a close coil and open coils to perform an open operation.

The double break vacuum interrupter includes a first contact system including an annular stationary contact which is engaged by a primary moving contact with the moving contact drive rod extending through the primary moving contact and through the opening of the annular stationary contact. A second contact system includes a secondary moving contact placed on the end of the moving contact rod, which engages and operates a floating contact, which moves along the same axis. A mechanical adjustment system is provided for the floating contact. A coaxial moving contact drive rod system is provided. With the encapsulated vacuum interrupter, the lower portion of the vacuum envelope is insulated from the current path, which allows for the elimination of the long internal cavity in the encapsulation as the lower end cup of the vacuum envelope may be grounded.

The first contact system includes an annular stationary contact and an annular moving contact retained on a moving contact drive rod. A second contact system includes a moving contact retained on an end of the moving contact drive rod and a floating contact retained along the same axis as the second moving contact. Both contact systems are enclosed in a vacuum envelope. A mechanical adjustment system is provided for the floating contact, which allows it to be positioned so that the secondary moving contact and floating moving contact may engage at a set interval before the annular moving contact engages the annular stationary contact. A resistor or inductor is connected between the second contact system and a load to prevent a current in-rush into the load.
