In a color cathode ray tube apparatus, a main electron lens unit for converging three in-line electron beams on a phosphor screen is formed of a plurality of electrodes, including at least first, second, and third electrodes, which are arranged from the cathode side toward the phosphor screen. An asymmetric electron lens, which horizontally diverges and vertically converges the electron beams, is formed on the cathode side in a lens effect region of a first electron lens composed of the second and third electrodes, and an asymmetric second electron lens, which has one effect with respect to the horizontal direction of the electron beams and another with respect to the vertical direction, is formed between the first and second electrodes, at the least. In this arrangement, the effects of the second lens to converge and diverge the electron beams in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively, are enhanced, and the effects of the first electron lens are attenuated, depending on the deflection of the electron beams by means of a deflection yoke. Thus, the horizontal and vertical diameters of beam spots at the peripheral portion of a picture can be reduced.

The adjacent second grid and third grid are connected by a resistor, and second and third voltages of substantially the same potential, corresponding to voltages higher than the middle first voltage and lower than the anode voltage, are applied thereto. An asymmetrical lens is provided between the adjacent second grid and the third grid second lens region, and a voltage which changes in synchronism with the deflecting magnetic field is applied to the first grid. Therefore, it is possible to provide a cathode ray tube wherein a phenomenon of sideways deviation of an electron beam at the peripheral region of a screen caused by lens magnification difference in the horizontal and vertical directions is reduced, and which has good image characteristics in all regions of the screen.

In a color cathode ray tube apparatus including an electron gun assembly having a main electron lens section for focusing and converging three electron beams arranged in a line on a phosphor screen, three electron beam through holes arranged in a line in the arrangement direction of the three electron beams are formed in each of the opposing surfaces of the first electrode having a relatively low potential and a second electrode having a relatively high potential, which electrodes constitute the main electron lens and substantially oppose, the pair of side beam through holes of the second electrode are decentered outward in the arrangement direction of the three electron beams with respect to the pair of side beam through holes of the first electrode, and each of the pair of side beam through holes of any one of the first and second electrodes is formed to have a substantially horizontally elongated shape in which both sides in the arrangement direction of the three electron beams are constituted by arcs and the length of, in the case of the first electrode, the length of the inner arc is larger than the length of the outer arc while, in the case of the second electrode, the length of the inner arc is smaller than the length of the outer arc. The three electron beams can be properly focused to obtain good image characteristics on an entire screen.

The main electron lens section has at least three grids G5, GM and G6 arranged in the order mentioned from the cathode side. The distance between the axis of the hole for guiding the center beam, made in the grid most close to the cathode side, and the axis of either hole for guiding a side beam, made in this gird, is shorter than the distance between the common axis of the coaxial holes for guiding the center beam, made in the control, accelerating and focusing electrodes constituting the electron beam generating section, and the common axis of either group coaxial holes for guiding a side beam, made in these control, accelerating and focusing electrodes. Hence, the spot which either side beam forms on the center of the phosphor screen when the three electron beams are focused by convergence magnets has no halos extending in the horizontal direction of the screen. As a result, the resultant image can have high resolution at any part of the phosphor screen.
