    摘要: According to a composition for a photo-alignment film of the present invention, which includes an azo compound and a polymer that exhibits mutual solubility with the azo compound, an adhesion to a substrate, particularly to a plastic substrate, is improved within both a photo-alignment film having a haze of not more than 1 obtained by forming a layer of the above composition for a photo-alignment film on a substrate and subsequently irradiating the layer with light to generate a liquid crystal alignment ability; and an optically anisotropic medium, wherein a layer (A) obtained by irradiating a layer of the above composition for a photo-alignment film with light to generate a liquid crystal alignment ability, and a polymer layer (B) obtained by polymerizing a liquid crystal compound having a polymerizable group in an aligned state generated by the layer (A) are bonded and laminated together by covalent bonds.

    摘要: The present invention provides a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing polymerizable liquid crystal compounds and a photoinitiator, wherein the photoinitiator has a light absorption band in a wavelength range of 280 to 400 nm; and at least one of the polymerizable liquid crystal compounds has a light absorption band in a wavelength range of 320 to 400 nm or a light-absorbing agent having a light absorption band in a wavelength range of 280 to 400 nm is contained. Thus, there is provided a material that can be cured in the air without replacing the atmosphere with an inert gas during irradiation with ultraviolet rays and that can achieve the characteristics required for a biaxial film, such as a sufficiently large front phase difference.

    摘要: A recording display medium is provided which can offer a high display contrast and is less likely to cause a lowering of contrast or disappearance of display even in low temperature and high temperature regions. A smectic liquid crystal composition, for use in the recording display medium, and use of the recording display medium are also provided. The liquid crystal composition comprises: at least one member selected from the group constituting of compounds represented by the following general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents an alkyl or alkoxy group having 8 to 18 carbon atoms; and at least one member selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by the following general formulae (II) to (VII): ##STR2## wherein R.sup.2, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, and R.sup.6 represent an alkyl group having 2 to 18 carbon atoms, R.sup.3, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.9, and R.sup.10 represent an alkyl or alkoxy group having 2 to 18 carbon atoms, and X represents a halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy group having 2 to 18 carbon atoms.
