摘要： This invention relates to aqueous epoxy resin-containing compositions and to such compositions which are particularly useful for depositing coatings on metallic substrates in order to protect substrates against corrosion. The aqueous compositions generally comprise (A) an organic resin component consisting essentially of at least one water-dispersible or emulsifiable epoxy resin or a mixture of resins containing more than 50% by weight of at least one water-dispersible or emulsifiable epoxy resin, (B) chromium trioxide, and (C) water, said composition further characterized as being substantially free of strontium chromate. The aqueous compositions may also contain other ingredients including zinc and/or ferro alloys.These aqueous compositions are useful as pretreatment coatings on metal surfaces, and in particular, on steel and on galvanized and aluminized metal substrates. This pretreatment coating can then be coated with weldable or non-weldable primer coatings followed by the application of decorative topcoats such as appliance topcoats or automotive topcoats. The invention also relates to metal substrates which have been coated with the pretreatment coating and, optionally, the weldable or non-weldable primer coatings.

摘要： A mar resistant, weldable zinc-coated metal substrate capable of sustaining the life of a copper-tipped electrode used in welding the substrate through a minimum of 2000 welds is achieved by applying a weldable primer coating composition to the metal, heating the primer composition to provide the desired dry coating, applying a protective coating composition over the primer coating in an amount sufficient to provide from about 50 to about 400 mg/ft.sup.2 of a dry film, and heating the protective coating composition to produce the dry film. Without the resin-based protective coating, the weldable primer is easily marred. The resin-based protective coating, which is from about 0.06 mil to about 0.13 mil thick, improves the mar resistance of the primer and enhances the corrosion resistance of the zinc-coated steel without interfering with the weldability of the primer. The primer contains from about 30 to about 60% of ferrophosphorus and from 0 to about 30% by weight zinc powder. When zinc is present, the ratio of ferrophosphorus to zinc is from about 9:1 to about 1:1 by weight.

The aqueous compositions generally comprise (A) an oxidized alkyl ester of a dibasic carboxylic acid, (B) trivalent chromium, (C) hexavalent chromium, (D) an organic resin component consisting essentially of at least one water-dispersible or emulsifiable epoxy resin or a mixture of resins containing more than 50% by weight of at least one water-dispersible or emulsifiable epoxy resin, and (E) water, said composition being further characterized as being substantially free of strontium chromate. The wet coating on a metal substrate may be dried at a low temperature insufficient to cause curing of the epoxy resin and then be painted with any primer coating immediately or thereafter and with decorative topcoats for building materials, appliances, and automobiles. The invention also relates to metal substrates having the passivating coating on their surfaces.

摘要： This invention relates to aqueous epoxy resin-containing compositions useful for depositing coatings on metallic substrates in order to protect substrates against corrosion. The aqueous compositions generally comprise (A) an organic resin component consisting essentially of at least one water-dispersible or emulsifiable epoxy resin; (B) a non-ionic emulsifier, (C) chromium trioxide, (D) a conductive pigment, (E) water, and, optionally, polytetrafluorethylene as a lubricant. The compositions may also contain phosphoric acid or an alkylphosphoric acid. These compositions are useful in coil coating operations to improve the electrocoatability of a metal substrate, in particular, steel, galvanized or aluminized substrates. The basecoated metal can then be conventionally coated or electro coated with weldable or non-weldable primer coatings and may be followed by the application of decorative topcoats. The invention also relates to metal substrates which have been coated with the pretreatment coating and, optionally, the weldable or non-weldable primer coatings.
