The present invention relates to a process for the production of a biguanide derivative useful as an intermediate for triazine-type herbicides, in which the biguanide derivative can be produced at high yields by reacting a phenoxyalkylamine salt with dicyandiamide in a solvent containing a paraffinic hydrocarbon having 8 to 15 carbon atoms, or by reacting a free phenoxylakylamine with a hydrogen halide in a solvent containing a paraffinic hydrocarbon having 8 to 15 carbon atoms and reacting the resultant a phenoxyalkylamine salt with dicyandiamide in the same solvent without isolating the phenoxyalkylamine salt.

Novel triazine derivatives represented by the general formula (I): ##STR1## (wherein all the symbols are as defined in the appended claims), and herbicides containing the triazine derivatives of the general formula (I) as effective component. These triazine derivatives can exhibit their herbicidal activity against various types of weeds from annual weeds to perennial weeds while causing no injury against paddy rice plants. Thus the herbicides of the present invention have advantages in that the herbicidal effect is great, the chemical damage is low, and the weed-killing spectral width is broad.

Provided a method for treating hardly-decomposable-substance-containing water, in which hardly decomposable substances such as dioxins, contained in contaminated water (treatment raw water) are concentrated and rendered harmless by providing the steps of (B) adding an adsorbent to water containing a hardly decomposable substance (treatment raw water) to cause the hardly decomposable substance to be adsorbed on the adsorbent (adsorption treatment step), (C) separating a permeated liquid through a filter membrane to concentrate the adsorbent adsorbing the hardly decomposable substance (membrane filtering treatment step), and (D) chemically decomposing the hardly decomposable substance adsorbed on the concentrated adsorbent with a peroxide without any operation of desorption from the adsorbent (chemical decomposition step), and the method can be applied to water containing a reducing substance such as bisulfate that neutralize free chlorine and can render the hardly decomposable substances harmless efficiently at a low cost without being limited by properties of the hardly decomposable substances contained.

The triazine derivatives of the present invention are roughly classified into the compounds of the general formulas [I] and [II] and further classified into 4 types depending on the kind of the Z in the general formulas and the position of substitution of the aminoalkyl group on the benzo(thia)furanyl group. Furthermore, these triazine derivatives are useful as a herbicide or, in particular, as a herbicide for paddy rice plants with greater effectiveness and less injury by chemicals than known ones. In addition, they have a wide herbicidal spectrum and exhibit remarkable effects against various kinds of weeds.
