摘要： A display medium having a display face is composed of a plurality of display layers laminated parallel to the display face. Each display layer comprises a polymer liquid crystal having a mesomorphic temperature range between its glass transition temperature and the upper limit temperature of a liquid crystal phase used for display. The mesomorphic temperature ranges of the plurality of display layers do not overlap each other. The optical densities of the display layers are controlled independently from the other by controlling the heating temperatures and cooling rates of the display layers, and the gradation of each color can be also controlled, so that a full-color display can be realized.

摘要： An optical modulation device is provided by forming an optical modulation layer comprising a polymer liquid crystal having a helical structure and a non-helical structure in chiral smectic C phase. The helical structure of the polymer liquid crystal is selectively formed or removed to provide a recorded state. The recorded state is held below the glass transition point of the polymer liquid crystal. The helical pitch of the helical structure can be selectively changed to form a recorded state. The helical structure can be formed to dispose its principal axis perpendicularly to the polymer liquid crystal layer. The recorded state may be read out by detecting a reflectance from the polymer liquid crystal layer.

摘要： An optical image recording apparatus includes an image holding member comprising a polymer recording layer capable of recording and holding data through heat application, thermal recording means for applying heat to the polymer recording layer, a photosensitive member, and exposure means for recording the data recorded by the recording layer by the photosensitive member. The polymer recording layer is preferably composed from a polymer liquid crystal. The polymer recording layer and the photosensitivie member can be provided in a laminated form. The data recorded on the photosensitive member may be subjected to an electrophotographic image forming process.

摘要： An image forming medium is constituted by a laminate including at least an optical scattering layer and a backing member preferably comprising a pattened color filter. The laminate is composed to have an interface between the optical scattering layer and the backing member capable of reflecting light incident to the optical scattering layer. The optical scattering layer may comprise a polymer liquid crystal optionally containing a fluorescent agent or nucleating agent so as to enhance the optical scattering effect. The interface may be given by a low-refractive index layer, such as air layer. The optical scattering layer and the backing member can be separated and combined with an adjusting means for adjusting the relative position of the optical scattering layer and the backing member to provide an image forming apparatus.

摘要： An apparatus for forming an image of the present invention comprises an image medium which is made of a heat-sensitive material in and from whcih an image can be thermally recordded and erased. The image medium has at least two display regions having different colors in the same face and having different thermal transition temperatures between a transparent state and a scattering state. A thermal signal applying member is employed for forming an image by thermally scanning said image medium which is characterized by applying to said medium a temperature controlled so that at least two differnt colors are displayed in a one-signal period of thermal scanning. The present invention also provides a method of forming an image using the image forming apparatus.

摘要： A polymeric liquid crystal composition includes a polymer mesomorphic compound having an asymmetric carbon atom and a low-molecular weight mesomorphic compound. The composition can be easily formed into a film of a large area, exhibits a response speed which is not substantially different from that of the low-molecular weight mesomorphic compound alone and stably retains alignment resistant to pressure or heat impact. Such a good alignment is especially obtained when the polymeric liquid crystal composition is incorporated in a liquid crystal device by being disposed between a pair of substrates preferably having an alignment face provided with an orientation characteristic for aligning the molecular axis of the liquid crystal composition in one direction. It is suitable that the polymer mesomorphic compound is optically active and has a helical rotation direction opposite to that of the low-molecular weight mesomorphic compound.

摘要： A crosslinked polymer liquid crystal is stretched to provide a polymer liquid crystal layer with a higher degree of uniform alignment than a non-crosslinked polymer liquid crystal. Such a stretched layer of crosslinked polymer liquid crystal is disposed between a pair of substrates to form a liquid crystal device showing a better contrast as a recording medium or display device. The improvement in alignment obtained by stretching of a crosslinked polymer liquid crystal is also effective in increasing the responsive characteristics in response to an electric field or magnetic field and also the pyro-electric effect of the resultant polymer liquid crystal layer where the polymer liquid crystal is a ferro-electric one.
