    摘要: A non-diffracting beam generator converts coherent light from a semiconductor laser into a small, intense, non-diffracting beam, which is directed into a non-linear optical element. The non-linear optical element converts this beam to light of a different wavelength. The non-linear optical element is a bulk element, not having an internal waveguide, and not requiring precise alignment of the non-diffracting beam. The non-diffracting beam preferably has a length matching the thickness of the non-linear optical element.

    摘要: A wavelength conversion apparatus has an optical amplifier, a wavelength converter, and an optical coupler coupled to form an optical ring resonator. The optical amplifier supplies pump light. The wavelength converter generates converted light, either from the pump light alone or by interaction between the pump light and signal light supplied from a signal source. The optical coupler extracts the converted light. The optical ring resonator preferably includes a tunable optical bandpass filter that defines the wavelength of the pump light. The optical coupler may also couple the signal light into the optical ring resonator, preferably through a polarization beam splitter and at least one polarization rotator, making the apparatus insensitive to the polarization of the signal light.

    摘要: An optical sensor has a core, a cladding, and an over-layer. In some embodiments the optical sensor also has a sensing layer. The over-layer acts as a sensitivity enhancement layer, with a refractive index larger than that of the cladding layers. A periodic structure, such as a long-period grating (LPG), is formed in the core. A transmission spectrum of the device shows several notches due to the existence of the LPG. A change in the sensing layer's refractive index and/or thickness results in a shift in the notch wavelengths of the LPG. By choosing proper refractive indices and thicknesses of the core, the cladding and the over-layer, the shift in the notch wavelengths can be significantly enhanced.
