摘要: A method of operating a network is beneficially conducted on a municipality or neighborhood level. The method in disclosed embodiments comprises installing a digital communications network within a limited selected geographical region. The network is formed from a high speed backbone and a plurality of nodes branching outward from the high speed backbone. A plurality of communicating stations are connected to the network and users at each communicating station subscribe to communicate over the network. Due to the unique scope of the network, the users are related primarily by virtue of their residence in a common geographical region. The network may be installed within a public utility right of way and may be used to monitor utility usage and to bill utility users. The network is thus independent of public telephone infrastructure. The network is preferably partitioned and communications are direct from station to station without broadcasting. Outside access, such as to the Internet is provided through gateways within the backbone.

摘要: An apparatus, data structures, and method are provided for prioritizing data transmissions within a network. As applied to a switching station in a network, the method prioritizes transmissions from the network to determine which packets should be transmitted from the switching station first when multiple packets are routed to the same outgoing port of the switching station. A packet prioritization station is provided, preferably as an add-on to the switching station. The packet prioritization station has a cache in which the destination address of each incoming packet is associated with every origin from which it has received a transmission within a certain time period. The packet prioritization station operates to give priority to transmissions to those destinations that have a higher number of associated origins. Thus, packets that are probably en route to time-critical users or groups of users will be sent before those that are less time-sensitive.

摘要: In an environmentally hardened network, a data and power distribution cable is employed in connection with reliable end connectors, high performance physical layer transceivers clocked at a lower rate than is specified and full duplex switched packet transmission techniques between switched nodes in order to extend operational distance between network elements. In a specific embodiment, the data and power distribution cable comprises a data distribution element, a power distribution element, an optional strain distribution element, an optional hollow conduit, and an extra shield and outdoor sheath. The cable may incorporate: 1) a Gel filled outdoor UTP (CAT-5) cable; 2) end connectors of type DB-9 [D-Sub] for connection of the UTP to network equipment; 3) power transmission cable of wire gauge sufficient to carry the power required by network equipment (switches, etc) for the specific segment of the network; and optionally 4) a hollow conduit that permits installation of optical fiber before or after installation of the cable.
