摘要: Modified polyolefins are produced by reacting a functionalized polyolefin with one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds having a functional group reactive with the functional group on the polyolefin. These modified polyolefins may then polymerize in the presence of a photoinitiator upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation and also have the capability of copolymerizing in the presence of a photoinitiator with other ethylenically unsaturated crosslinking agents upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation. These modified polyolefins may also contain pendant carboxyl groups, which have the propensity to form hydrophilic salts with amines, and therefore may be rendered water-dispersible. The modified polyolefins of the present invention significantly improve the adhesion of paints, inks, and adhesives to various plastic and metal substrates.

摘要: The present invention provides solvent- and water-based primer compositions that include at least one carboxylated polyolefin that has been modified with one or more polyfunctional alcohols. The carboxylated polyolefins are obtained by the reaction of polyolefins with at least one of unsaturated carboxylic esters, unsaturated carboxylic acids, unsaturated carboxylic anhydrides, acrylic monomers, and mixtures thereof. The carboxylated polyolefins are then further modified by reaction with one or more polyfunctional alcohols. These polyfunctional alcohol-modified polyolefins may also contain pendant carboxyl groups, which have the propensity to form hydrophilic salts with amines or inorganic bases, thereby rendering the polyfunctional alcohol-modified polyolefins water-dispersible. These primer compositions are useful for significantly improving the adhesion of paints, adhesives, and inks to various plastic and metal substrates.

摘要: The invention relates to solvent-based primer compositions containing 0.5 to 40 weight percent of a modified polyolefin and a solvent selected from the group consisting of ester solvents, ketone solvents, aliphatic solvents, aromatic solvents and mixtures thereof. The modified polyolefin is formed from an amorphous polyolefin selected from polypropylene and a propylene copolymer or a propylene terpolymer or an ethylene copolymer or terpolymer. Preferably the polyolefin is a polypropylene copolymer or terpolymer containing about 1 to about 99 mole percent ethylene, 1-butene, 1-pentene, and 1-hexene. The amorphous polyolefin has a number average molecular weight ranging from about 1,000 to 15,000 and is chemically modified with one or more unsaturated carboxylic acids selected from the group consisting of acids, esters and anhydrides. These primers are useful for significantly improving the adhesion of paints to polyolefin surfaces.

摘要: The invention enables solution modification of a polyolefin with an unsaturated anhydride, unsaturated acid, or unsaturated ester, with high efficiency without the formation of undesirable impurities resulting from the competing reaction of the solvent with the unsaturated anhydride, unsaturated acid, or unsaturated ester. The process entails combining a polyolefin; a solvent; an unsaturated anhydride, unsaturated acid or unsaturated ester and a free-radical initiator to form a reaction mixture. The solvent is selected from the group consisting of substituted aromatic solvents which do not contain benzylic hydrogens and mixtures thereof. This reaction mixture is reacted under suitable conditions to produce a modified polyolefin.
