摘要: A light source section provided in a backlight unit has a smaller width in a direction perpendicular to a length direction of the light source section than a width in the same direction of the liquid crystal panel. A plurality of LED modules are arranged along the length direction of the light source section. The LED modules are respectively assigned to areas of the liquid crystal panel, which are extended in the width direction of the light source section. Lenses are respectively disposed over the LED modules and expand light toward the areas. A control device controls each of the plurality of light sources separately or each of groups into which the plurality of light sources are divided, separately. Accordingly, it is possible to improve a contrast of a display screen, while reducing the number of light sources.

摘要: Provided is a liquid crystal display device which is capable of eliminating a non-display region at a peripheral edge of a display screen, and displaying an image on the entire surface thereof. A backlight unit (22) emits parallel rays. The liquid crystal panel (24) transmits the parallel ray as a unit parallel ray in pixel unit, thereby forming an original image. An image enlarging panel (26) is an optical element having a flat-plate shape. The image enlarging panel (26) causes the unit parallel ray of each pixel to obliquely travel by refraction to shift a position of the unit parallel ray in a flat-plate plane, to thereby forms a display image enlarged the original image. A viewing angle enlarging panel (28) expands an angular distribution of the entering unit parallel ray from the image enlarging panel (26), thereby enlarging a viewing angle of the display image.

摘要: High quality images on liquid crystal panel can be obtained alleviating variations of the brightness and color among regions, in which backlight is divided when emission luminance of the backlight is controlled in each region based on image signal. A backlight device is divided into multiple regions, and has a configuration in which light emitted from a light source of each of the regions is allowed to leak to other regions. A maximum gradation detector detects a maximum gradation of a regional image signal displayed on each of the regions of the liquid crystal panel. An image gain calculator obtains a gain to be multiplied to each regional image signal by using luminance bitmap held by luminance bitmap memory. An emission luminance calculator obtains an emission luminance of light to be emitted by each light source.

An emission luminance calculator obtains an emission luminance of light to be emitted by each light source, by using an operation expression according to the emission luminance of light to be emitted by the backlight device. At this time, if the emission luminance takes a negative value as a result of calculation, the emission luminance calculator makes a correction so that the emission luminance can take a value equal to or greater than 0.
