This arrangement save space by minimizing the overall footprint of the station. The connection between these components can be easily established or terminated for performing maintenance on a particular component or subassembly. Subassemblies within the housing may be extracted without impacting the overall structure of the device or use of the other components, and additional components can be easily added. Additionally, the reliability of the apparatus and constituent components and subassemblies is further improved through the implementation of electrostatic countermeasures, including component to component grounding and automatic grounding of the entire apparatus when users insert a key into a central locking mechanism electrically connected to a common electronic and physical reference.

A portable printing system is provided for printing an image, such as alphanumeric or symbol information on a moveable recording medium, such as a tape, a sheet or the like, by means of manual scanning of the recording medium relative to the printing system. The printing system comprises a hand-held printer unit including a print head having an array of printing elements in combination with an adjacently disposed drive roller both disposed in cooperative arrangement along one edge of the printer unit. The drive roller is coupled to an encoder inside the unit that generates timing pulses upon rotational movement of the drive roller which control the rate of printing at the printing head of the printer to synchronize printing with the rate of movement of the recording medium relative to the printer unit. The printer unit may be detachably mounted to a recording medium transport unit which includes a platen which is engaged by the drive roller and print head with a recording medium and ink ribbon disposed between the print head and the platen. Alternatively, the printer unit may be hand-held with the drive roller and print head in engagement with a flat recording medium, such as an ordinary paper sheet. In either case, the recording medium travels in a path substantially perpendicular to the array of printing elements on the print head. A combination of two tape recording mediums is also disclosed to provide means to protect the printed image from the possibility of smudges and smears or other image deterioration from occurring directly on the printed image.

A hybrid printer includes a first printer, a second printer and a printer mounting base capable of mounting the first and second printers. The first printer has a first printing section for printing on a first recording paper, a first transfer path for transferring the first recording paper to the first printing section, a first base having the first transfer path formed thereon, and a first cantilever for supporting the first printing section above the first base. The second printer has a second printing section for printing on a second recording paper. The printer mounting base has a second base, a second transfer path formed on the second base and a second cantilever fixed to the second base. The second printer is mountable on the second cantilever of the printer mounting base. The printer mounting base is mountable in the rear of the first printer, and the second transfer path is disposed on an extension line of the first transfer path and continuous to the first transfer path when the printer mounting base is mounted on the first printer.
