A continuous casting method is demonstrated, in which a slab including a liquid core 11 is bulged and then reduced in its thickness with a reduction roll pair 7, in which case, the uppermost surface of the lower roll 7b in the reduction roll pair 7 is located at a higher level than the lower pass line 9 of the slab. With this method, the slab can be efficiently reduced in its thickness without any loss of reduction force and the generation of segregation can be suppressed at the center area of the slab in the thickness direction.A continuous casting apparatus according to the invention is suitable for carrying out the continuous casting method according to the invention.A slab produced by the method according to the invention has good quality, since the segregation at the center area can be improved over the entire width in which the liquid core 11 is included.

In producing thin slabs by continuous casting, a method is developed in which internal defects are reduced to improve a production yield. Narrow sides of cast slabs are cooled in a controlled manner to produce cast slabs having a projection in a center of each of the narrow sides to a height of 5-10 mm above the level of the edge portions, and squeeze reduction with a reduction of 10-45% is carried out while an unsolidified portion of the narrow sides of the slab is within 50-80% of the thickness of the cast slab.

A mold powder for continuous steel casting, contains CaO, SiO.sub.2 and fluoride as the main components. The ratio by weight of CaO', represented by the following equation, to SiO.sub.2 is 0.9-2.8 and the CaF.sub.2 content is about 5-60 wt. %. The powder contains Na.sub.2 O in an amount of 0-25 wt. % and C in an amount of 0-10 wt. %.CaO'=T.CaO-F.times.(56/38)wherein T.CaO represents the total Ca content in the mold powder as converted to CaO(wt. %) and F represents the total F content in the mold powder(wt. %). The powder is used in a method for continuous steel casting.

A continuous casting method and apparatus therefor wherein a reaction force/reduction controller selects a pivot reduction roll such that the thickness of the solidified shell of the cast slab having a liquid core is equal to the target thickness T.sub.ref, and calculates a difference between a thickness T.sub.in of the cast slab having a liquid core at the inlet of the reduction roll zone PRT and the target thickness T.sub.ref, i.e., .DELTA.T. The resulting value of .DELTA.T, i.e., a target reduction is provided to the reduction controllers 2 of the pivot reduction roll. The reaction force/reduction controller 1 assigns target reductions 1/3 .DELTA.T and 2/3 .DELTA.T to the two reduction rolls upstream of the pivot reduction roll. The reaction force/reduction controller 1 calculates a target pressure (P.sub.i +.alpha.) on the basis of the selected value for .alpha., and the resulting target pressure (P.sub.i +.alpha.) is provided to each of the reduction controllers 2 of the reduction rolls, downstream of the pivot reduction roll.

A thin slab that is free of internal cracks is formed by reducing a continuously cast strand having a liquid core. The placement of the reduction rolls is controlled to effect a suitable amount of reduction. The methods effectively reduce bulging strain, as well as strain associated with reduction of the strand. As a result, total accumulated strain is reduced and a thin slab free of internal cracks can be manufactured at high speeds. The apparatus includes reduction blocks which are capable of shifting the rotation angle of an upper roller segment frame. Misalignment strain is reduced and the thickness of the strand can be changed without stopping the manufacturing operation.
