A data slot reservation system in a distributed wireless personal area network including at least one or more devices. The data slot reservation system includes a first device for broadcasting an extended distributed reservation protocol (DRP) availability information element storing data slot reservation information of at least one neighboring device located in a plutality-hop distance; and a second device for checking reservation states of neighboring devices of the first device by using the extended DRP availability information element, and carrying out a data slot reservation negotiation according to a result of the check. Therefore, the data slot reservation system can avoid reservation conflicts all together, or effectively resolve reservation conflicts when they occur.

The number of data slots allocable to each stream, including a new stream, to be transferred is calculated. The necessary data slots are relinquished to the new stream from existing streams when the number of the allocable data slots is less than a number of preset data slots of the new stream.

A media access control method of a wireless sensor network (WSN) is provided. The media access control method includes first sensor nodes, existing in a non-overlapping area where clusters do not overlap, media-accessing with a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) method and communicating with a Cluster head (CH) in a first section. Further, and the method includes second sensor nodes, existing in an overlapping area where the clusters overlap, media-accessing with a contention-based method and communicating with the CH in a second section. Because communication between nodes of the non-overlapping area where the clusters do not overlap, uses a reservation-based TDMA method, collision between nodes can be prevented, and because communication between nodes of the overlapping area where the clusters overlap, uses a contention-based CSMA/CA method, interference between neighboring clusters can be prevented.

The clustering method includes the operations of determining a number of initial nodes within radio range of ordinary node, the ordinary nodes existing within radio range of a cluster head, and setting an ordinary node having a highest number of initial nodes among the ordinary nodes in the radio range of the cluster head, as a gateway. Because the number of usually large energy consuming cluster heads and gateways can be minimized, energy efficiency of wireless sensor network increases.
