An image reading apparatus includes a document setting table, an image data generation unit, a downsized image data generation unit, a document information generation unit, and an image cropping unit. The image data generation unit reads a plurality of source documents placed on the document setting table and generates image data representing the plurality of source documents. The downsized image data generation unit generates downsized image data by reducing a size of the image data. The document information generation unit analyzes the downsized image data to detect respective positions of the plurality of source documents and generate document information indicating the detected positions. The image cropping unit cuts out a plurality of regions from the image data according to the document information and acquires a plurality of items of cropped image data respectively representing the plurality of source documents.

The reading section reads images of respective pages of a spread document one at a time. The orientation detecting section sequentially detects orientations of respective images read by the reading section. The orientation determining section determines whether or not the orientation detecting section detects orientation alternation between a first orientation and a second orientation opposite to the first orientation for a read image read by the reading section. In an image processing apparatus, a character recognizing unit identifies a character image in a document image. A font matching unit determines a character code and a font type corresponding to the identified character image. A fore-and-background setting unit sets the document image as a background image and sets a standard character image based on the determined character code and the determined font type. A background image correcting unit (a) deletes a deletion area in the background image, the deletion area taking a same position as the character image or the standard character image, (b) interpolates a differential area between the character image and the standard character image in a specific neighborhood area that contacts with the deletion area on the basis of the background image, and (c) interpolates the deletion area on the basis of the back ground image.

The image scanning device scans a document image sheet by sheet from a document including plural sheets. An image processing apparatus includes a visible code area searching unit and a color replacement processing unit. The visible code area searching unit searches for a visible code area in a color document image corresponding to a document, and the visible code area includes a visible code. The color replacement processing unit (a) generates as a local color histogram a color histogram of the visible code area in a predetermined color space and determines whether removal of a stain image should be performed or not on the basis of a ratio of a pixel classified into a bin that includes a color of the stain image in the local color histogram, and (b) replaces the color of the stain image in the visible code area with a background color of the document if it is determined that the removal of the stain image should be performed.

In an image forming apparatus, an extraction processing portion extracts one or more items of personal information from image data of a card read by an image reading portion. A document data acquiring portion acquires image data of a fixed-form document. A document layout acquiring portion acquires document layout information that indicates one or more composite positions in the image data of the fixed-form document where the one or more items of personal information are to be combined. A composition processing portion generates composite image data by combining the personal information extracted by the extraction processing portion with the image data of the fixed-form document in accordance with the document layout information. A print control portion causes an image forming portion to execute a composite image printing process of printing a composite image represented by the composite image data on a sheet.
