    Abstract: A magnetic compass in which the compass card and magnet are relatively movable with respect to each other such that only the magnet is gimballed to seek alignment with the earth''s magnetic field irrespective of the inclination of the compass card. The compass magnet is rotatably mounted within a gimbal assembly and is operative to become aligned with the axis of the earth''s magnetic field to seek the dip angle of the magnetic field while providing a rotational torque to cause rotation of the compass card to its balanced position indicative of compass heading. In alternative implementation, the compass magnet is maintained in substantially horizontal disposition to enhance the restoring torque.

    Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a bridge construction which submerges below the surface of a body of water so that the vessel passes over the bridge rather than under or between two raised sections. The side rail structure of the bridge is constructed to pivot along the major axis of the bridge so that upon submerging the bridge the side rail construction pivots and lies flat on the bridges transportation surface to (a) not interfere with the vessel which will pass thereover and (b) to provide a screen area to keep debris carried by the body of water from being deposited directly on the transportation surface. A buoyancy-gravity device is connected to the pivotally actuated side rails to cause the rails to be flat and cover the transportation surface when the bridge submerges and which device will cause the side rails to pivot to their erect raised condition when the bridge is raised to its surface condition which will cast any debris deposited upon the bridge during its submergence back into the body of water leaving a clear transportation surface top side of the bridge.
