Abstract: A fluid pulse operated system provides selective output for operating a fluid device, such as reversing operation of a fluid motor, or memory device in a logic environment. The system includes a pair of chambers separated by a flexible diaphragm. Fluid paths, one through each of the chambers, each includes an inlet for pressurized fluid into the associated chamber and a chamber outlet connected with a normally closed vent valve. Output signal lines are provided in the paths, one between each of the outlets and the associated vent valve, for connection with the motor or providing memory signals. The diaphragm serves as a valve member which selectively cooperates with one of a pair of valve seats, one for each of the outlets, for closing the selected outlet. During normal operation of the system either of the outlets may be open and the other closed by the diaphragm which is releasably retained in its selected closed position by a differential in facial area of opposite sides of the diaphragm exposed to fluid in the respective chambers. In order to reverse the diaphragm, thereby opening the previously closed outlet and closing the formerly open outlet, the vent associated with the outlet to be closed is momentarily opened, thereby reducing the fluid pressure in the associated chamber and causing the diaphram to reverse its position and seat against the valve seat about the outlet to be closed. The system operates with little power while pulsing through a control cycle and stands by with no power in a static condition, by provision of positive fluid pressure, being decreased by control pulses and by provision of gating structures sealing off leakage paths in static condition.

Abstract: A device for providing an indication of the condition of a pressurized fluid circuit is disclosed. The device includes means defining a restricted zone and a supply of compressible material positioned in communication with the restricted zone. The restricted zone is provided with aperture means exposing at least a portion of the compressible material for visual inspection. Fluid inlet means are connected with a fluid circuit and operate to admit pressurized fluid to the restricted zone, in consequence of which the compressible material is compressed. The contrasting relaxed and compressed conditions of the compressible material afford visual indications of the condition of the fluid circuit.

Abstract: Fluid operated devices such as pneumatic or hydraulic rams are controlled by multiple-flow valve apparatus operable from momentary fluid trigger pulses to initiate both fluid power drive and exhaust functions. Thus a fluid pulse triggered bistable state fluid path logic control element controls in a logic network at least one pair of slave valves which respectively convey fluid under pressure from a source to an output channel and exhaust the output channel in response to the state of the logic element. The logic elements and valves comprise a compartment with a diaphragm movable into opposing chambers in response to fluid pressures in contact therewith to open or close fluid flow paths through at least one chamber. Accordingly, a piston may be reciprocated at will or other load devices may be operated from steady state or continuing fluid paths controlled by momentary fluid pulses either randomly or cyclically in a simple efficient fluid controlled valve arrangement of interconnected fluid logic elements.

Abstract: A fluid operated system controls a reversible fluid operated apparatus and is herein described in the form of a speed control system for a reversible motor such as a double-acting cylinder housing a piston. The piston is selectively driven in either of opposite directions by a pressurized operating fluid introduced into one end of the cylinder while the opposite end of the cylinder is vented. Control devices in conduits opening into opposite ends of the cylinder regulate the piston speed. If desired only one of the conduits may be provided with a control device so that the piston moves at maximum speed in one direction and more slowly in the opposite direction. Each control device includes a restriction to the flow of fluid through the associated conduit, and has a by-pass with a fluid piloted diaphragm valve about the restriction, the fluid pilot operatively communicating with the opposite conduit. When operating fluid passes through one of the conduits to operate the cylinder, the valve associated with the other conduit is piloted closed so that fluid vented from the cylinder passes through the restriction of the other conduit, thus retarding the venting rate of the fluid and slowing movement of the piston. If desired, one or both restrictions may be of a variable type.

Abstract: Fluid operated logic device providing a positive going OR or a negative going AND signal is disclosed. Input signals are provided via fluid moving in first and second circuits or fluid flow paths which pass through a common chamber. The chamber incorporates a fluid impervious flexible diaphragm which isolates the first and second circuits or flow paths within the chamber. The diaphragm is movable in response to fluid movement through one of the first and second flow paths to block the other flow path through the chamber, thereby precluding fluid movement from the inlet to the outlet opening of the other flow path and also preventing feedback of one input signal into the other circuit. The device is passive, operating on signal power alone.
