Abstract: The present invention relates to a clothing treatment apparatus and a method for controlling the clothing treatment apparatus. The clothing treatment apparatus comprises: a tub in which washing water is stored; a rotating tub provided to be rotatable in the tub; a pulsator which is provided to be rotatable on the lower portion of the rotating tub; a washing shaft connected to the pulsator; a dehydrating shaft connected to the rotating tub; a clutch mechanism which transfers a rotating force selectively to the washing shaft and the dehydrating shaft; and a clutch driver which operates the clutch mechanism, wherein the clutch driver comprises: a clutch motor provided with a driving shaft; a cam for interlocking the clutch mechanism according to the rotation of the clutch motor; and a clutch motor driver having a control circuit for driving the clutch motor. The clutch motor driver comprises: a motor driving circuit for driving the clutch motor while adjusting a driving direction and a driving speed of the clutch motor; a shunt resistor generating a phase current due to a voltage difference generated by the motor driving circuit; and a motor sensing controller which detects currents at both ends of the shunt resistor and determines whether the clutch mechanism and the clutch motor normally operate according to detected current values of the shunt resistor.
