Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of preparing a positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery and a positive electrode active material prepared thereby, wherein the preparation method includes a first step of preparing a lithium transition metal oxide by mixing a lithium raw material and a transition metal precursor containing 70 mol % or more of nickel based on the total number of moles of transition metals and sintering the mixture; and a second step of washing the lithium transition metal oxide with hot water of more than 90° C., wherein, after the second step, a result of EELS analysis of a particle surface of the lithium transition metal oxide satisfies Equation 1.

Abstract: The positive electrode active material includes: a first phase containing a lithium manganese oxide with a rock salt structure; and a second phase containing a lithium metal oxide with a layered structure, in a mixed state. In the positive electrode active material, the content of manganese may account for about 50 mol % or more of the total content of metals contained in the positive electrode active material, excluding lithium, and niobium (Nb) which is additionally doped on the positive electrode active material may be further included in an amount of about 2,000 ppm to 9,500 ppm based on the total content of the positive electrode active material.

The positive electrode also has a harness at which cracks occur in a measuring rod of 2 pi (Ø) or more.
