Abstract: Method and apparatus for converting an aluminum nitrate solution to Alpha -alumina for electrolytic reduction to aluminum. The solution is introduced into a fluidized bed under conditions which remove a substantial portion of the nitrate values as nitric acid vapor and form a solid product which is heated further to remove residual water and nitrate values and to convert the alumina to Alpha -alumina.
