In one embodiment, the invention relates to a game controller for a video game system in the shape of a guitar, including a body section generally in the shape of a body of a guitar, the body section including a cutout and a first electrical connector, a latch arm structure coupled to the body section about the cutout, and a neck section generally in the shape of a guitar neck and a headstock, the neck section including, a portion insertable into the cutout of the body section, the portion including an indentation positioned so as to be approximate the latch arm structure when the portion is inserted into the cutout of the body section, the indentation configured to receive at least a portion of the latch arm structure, a second electrical connector having one or more contacts, the second electrical connector configured to couple with the first electrical connector when the portion is inserted into the cutout of the body section, and one or more fret buttons, where each of the one or more fret buttons is electrically connected to at least one of the one or more contacts.
