The present invention is directed at a specialized bushing and method for use in coupling the shift cable end with the shift lever in various motor vehicles where the shift cable end is comprised of an oblong body having a coupling aperture, a notch, a front shelf and rear shelf protruding into the coupling aperture from opposite sides of the oblong body, and the shift lever is comprised of a base, a shaft, a neck and a head, and the two are coupled through the use of a bushing and horseshoe-shaped retaining clip. The bushing preferably includes a seating member configured to sit within the coupling aperture having a bore configured to receive the shaft, a securing member for engaging with the notch, two supporting members extending vertically from the top surface of the seating member to provide stability when the bushing is seated in the coupling aperture that define a space over the top surface sufficient to accommodate the retaining clip, angled surfaces extending from the top surface of the seating member to both sides of the securing member to engage with the retaining clip. The bottom surface of the seating member has various recesses to accommodate the configurations of the front and rear shelf such that the seating member sits on the front and rear shelf when it is installed into the coupling aperture.
