Abstract: 950,333. Filters for liquids. WINSLOW ENGINEERING & MANUFACTURING CO. May 15, 1962 [May 17, 1961], No. 18011/61. Heading B1D. A cartridge 11 for filtering contaminant from, and separating water from, hydrocarbon liquids, comprises a layer 34 of absorbent fibrous material, e.g. sisal, a layer 35 of non- woven fabric, e.g. cotton, felt or synthetic fibre that will filter out the fine contaminant from the hydrocarbon liquid, a spacer 38, e.g. coiled wire, or string, or expanded metal webbing between the said layers, and a layer 36 of water coalescing glass fibre, or glass wool bonded by a phenolic binder, which layer causes water tc fall under force of gravity into a sump 14. A suitable bonding material is used on the ends of the various media to retain them in the cartridge 11. The shape of a central cavity 18 is maintained by a coil spring 19. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, a droplet barrier 45 of, e.g. polyurethane, comprises a fourth layer, and a further such layer 57 assists coalescing of the water droplets. In a modification, Fig. 5 (no shown), the layers 45, 57 are replaced by a single such barrier of fine mesh monofilamen screen. In a modification of Fig. 1, (Fig. 6, no shown), such a barrier is located around the periphery of the filter cartridge.
