Abstract: A ship of simplified construction for the marine transportation of liquefied gases at cryogenic temperatures is equipped with at least one concrete tank. In a first embodiment, the concrete tank is surrounded by a layer of sand. A second embodiment contemplates both a layer of sand surrounding the concrete tank and a further layer of insulating material within the tank. In a third embodiment, a layer of insulating material is provided within the concrete tank. A fourth embodiment of the invention relates to a concrete tank surrounded by a layer of insulating material which abuts the hull of the ship. And in a fifth embodiment of the invention, the entire hull of the ship is concrete and forms at least one containment tank. In the fifth embodiment, there may be provided a layer of insulating material within each tank.

Abstract: A ship of simplified construction is adapted for the marine transportation of cryogenic material. At least one single barrier containment tank is located within the hull of the ship. On the inboard side of the inner hull and transverse bulkheads of the ship is provided a thermal insulating system, and covering the inner surface of this insulating system is a gas and liquid impervious liner. A space is provided between the liner and the wall of each containment tank and a cofferdam is provided outboard of the inner hull, outboard of the inner bottom and between the transverse bulkheads. Two circulation systems are provided, the first being provided in the space intermediate the liner and the tank, and the second being provided in the space defined by the cofferdam. Means for the detection of leaks in the containment system are also provided.

Abstract: A SHIP SYSTEM FOR TRANSPORTATION OF HIGHLY TOXIC CARGOES HAVING LIQUID DENSITIES GREATER THAN WATER AND GAS DENSITIES GREATER THAN AIR, SUCH AS CHLORINE. THE SHIP SYSTEM COMBINES A SERIES OF UNIQUE FEATURES TO MAXIMIZE SAFETY OF BOTH HUMAN AND AQUATIC LIFE. THE SHIP SYSTEM CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF CARGO TANKS ARRANGED LONGITUDINALLY ALONG THE CENTERLINE OF THE SHIP, EACH CARGO TANK ISOLATED FROM THE REMAINDER OF THE SHIP BY MEANS OF A SECONDARY BARRIER SPACE FORMED BY INSULATED LONGITUDINAL ANDY TRANVERSE BULKHEADS, INNER BOTTOM AND UPPER DECK. THE SYSTEM PROVIDES EXTENSIVE UNIQUE COLLISION PROTECTION FEATURES TO MINIMIZE THE PROBABILITY OF CARGO LIQUID AND/OR GAS RELEASE TO THE ATMOSPHERE, WHICH MAY BE CAUSED BY GROUNDING OR COLLISION WITH ANOTHER SHIP. FURTHER, THE SYSTEM ELIMINATES THE NEED FOR HANDLING CARGO GAS DURING TRANSIT, WHICH ALSO ADDS TO PERSONNEL SAFETY.
