An automatic exposure control apparatus comprises a skin color extracting circuit for extracting a skin-colored portion from an input video signal and a focus condition detecting circuit for detecting a focus condition of the skin-colored portion. Exposure is controlled based on outputs of the two circuits. That is, when a skin-colored portion is extracted and it is detected that the skin-colored portion is in an in-focus condition, exposure is controlled so as to be appropriate with respect to the skin-colored portion.

An automatic specimen sealing system which provides totally automated sealing of glass slides. Slides are ejected sequentially at predetermined intervals onto a conveyor at a predetermined orientation. The size of the specimens held on the slides is detected, and liquid adhesive is supplied onto the slides in an amount determined in accordance with the thus-detected specimen sizes. Glass covers are then placed over the specimens, with the size of the glass covers being also selected in accordance with the specimen size. The slides with the covers placed thereon are next fed to a binding device where the covers and slides are bound together. Finally, the slides are assembled in trays.

An integrating circuit is provided to retard a signal indicative of out-of-focus condition, or a pulse generator is provided to intermittently power a drive motor for focus adjustment. The integrating circuit and the pulse generator are actuated concurrently with commencement of photographing.

A method of measuring a profile of an object wherein an ultrasonic wave is radiated from an ultrasonic transducer toward an object supported by a supporting member in the water filled in a water tank, and a wave reflected at the surface of the object is detected by the transducer, and an apparatus for carrying out the method. A traversing device moves the transducer sequentially to a plurality of measurement points on an arc equidistant from a predetermined rotational center while opposing the transducer to the predetermined rotational center. A supporting device moves the supporting member relative to the transducer and sets the object in the predetermined position under water. A control device delivers a drive signal to the traversing device to move the transducer sequentially to the measurement points, causes the transducer to radiate an ultrasonic wave when the transducer is in each of the measurement points, calculates a distance between the transducer and the surface of the object in accordance with a difference between the time the transducer radiates the ultrasonic wave and the time transducer receives the wave reflected at the surface of the object, calculates coordinates of each of the measurement points, and coordinates of the surface of the object corresponding to each of the measurement points from the calculated distance, and obtains the profile of the object from the calculated coordinates of the surface of the object at each of the measurement points.
