An example method disclosed herein comprises including operating system (OS) agnostic mode services that are available during an OS agnostic mode to allow a single set of drivers to be used during boot mode and the OS agnostic mode. The example method further comprises including a dual-mode library that is capable of determining the current operating mode of the processor system and binding the drivers to available services accordingly.

    摘要: Embodiments of a method and system for saving system context after a power outage are disclosed herein. A power agent operates to reduce the possibility of data corruption due to partially written data during an unexpected power outage. The power agent can determine an amount of time remaining before a power store is depleted. Based on the amount of time, the power agent can store system context information. Correspondingly, the power agent can operate to save complete system context, partial system context, or flush (I/O) buffers. Once power is restored, the power agent can restore the system context based on the nature of the save. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

An example processor restart method disclosed herein includes recording a log of pre-boot initialization actions, and replaying a portion of the log during subsequent processor restarts to shorten pre-boot initialization time. The example processor restart method disclosed herein may further include creating a log index table for easier referral to portions of the log, storing the log and the log index table in non-volatile memory, using the log index table to reorder the replaying of the log, and reordering the replay of the log to initialize the video graphics adapter earlier in a processor restart sequence.

    摘要: A flash memory has an interleaved boot block compatible with multiple processor architectures. The interleaved boot block may include one boot block compatible with a first CPU architecture and another boot block compatible with a second CPU architecture. These two boot blocks may be combined in an interleaved manner in the flash memory so that during a boot process only one of the two boot blocks executes, although both are stored in the flash memory. By interleaving different boot blocks, a common socket computer system capable of supporting multiple processor architectures may be achieved without fully replacing an incompatible basic input/output system (BIOS). Further, the flash memory may contain an updatable portion in which any BIOS segments incompatible with a processor architecture may be updated via a recovery, or update, process.

    摘要: A method and system to switch between a Service virtual machine (VM) and a Guest VM in a virtual machine monitor (VMM) of a computer system. The VMM is loaded on the computer system to support a Service VM and a Guest VM. The Service OS is booted in the Service VM during the pre-boot phase. The Guest OS is booted in the Guest VM of the computer system. During OS runtime of the Guest OS, a VM switch is performed from the Guest VM to the Service VM without rebooting the computer system. The Service OS includes diagnostic tools to analyze the Guest OS. In one embodiment, the VM switch is performed by firmware of the computer system. In another embodiment, the VMM operates in accordance with an Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) framework standard.
