A system, method, and computer program product for managing database servers and services is disclosed, which expands the capabilities of existing systems by providing better scalability and security. A database management system includes databases consisting of database clients and servers that handle the storing of information, a multi-database client that manages database servers, service modules which allow other systems to access the database servers, and a database access manager that manages requests from the service modules. A database access manager facilitates and coordinates interaction between the service modules and the multi-database client. Service modules provide interfaces from which other external or internal systems can access the managed databases. Requests can be sent between systems and the database access manager via the service modules. Two present and representative implementations of service modules are: user management and call detail record (CDR) collection. The user management service module allows systems to access user account information stored in the databases. The CDR collection service module inserts details for each call made on the network.

A Voice over the Internet (VoIP) system includes a gateway server that handles calls received from a public switched telephone network and a packet-switched network, a routing server, and a database server. Messages can be sent between the gateway server, routing server, and database server over the packet-switched network. A provisioning system is coupled to the database server. A management system is also coupled to the gateway server, routing server, database server, and management system over the packet-switched network. A network manager automatically queries a client database to determine an update, and sends a message representative of the update to at least one of the gateway server, routing server, database server, and management system over the packet-switched network. A licensing server supports licensing of the VoIP system.

A routing management system includes a routing manager which maintains a list of local routes, establishes and manages connections to the routing server(s), exports routes to the routing server(s), imports disseminated routes from the routing server(s), obtains static global and dynamic routes from the routing server(s), caches those routes for future use, finds all matching routes for a particular number dialed by the user, and prioritizing those routes based on timing, access and ordering information. An additional embodiment contains at least one routing server which provides look-up services for gateway server(s), allows export of local routes from gateway server(s), and distributes translation data; and at least one gateway server which handles calls received on either the Internet protocol (IP) or traditional telephony networks. The gateway server bridges calls between the different kinds of networks, interacts with users, interfaces with the routing system.

In a voice over internet protocol environment, the invention allows for the testing of routes among various gateways. In an embodiment, a method for selecting a route for a voice over IP call within a communications network is provided. The method includes receiving a VoIP call request from a user, identifying potential candidate routes, assessing the quality and cost of routes and determining a route based on cost, quality and/or user preferences.
