摘要: A method for the manufacture of bisphenols comprises introducing a combined feed stream comprising a feed stream and a recycle stream into a reactor system comprising at least one reactor containing a catalytic proportion of an acid catalyst and wherein the combined feed stream comprises a carbonyl compound and a stoichiometric excess of phenol; removing from the reactor system a reactor effluent; splitting the reactor effluent into a crystallization feed stream and an effluent recycle stream; extracting from said crystallization feed stream a bisphenol adduct, remainder comprising a mother liquor stream; dehydrating said mother liquor stream and said effluent recycle stream in a dehydrator wherein excess water and carbonyl compound are removed; and recycling the dehydrated mother liquor and the dehydrated effluent recycle stream back to the combined feed stream to effect improved production of p,p-bisphenol, along with increased reactor selectivity and reduced promoter quantities.

摘要: A method of precipitating a poly(arylene ether) includes preparing a poly(arylene ether) solution comprising a poly(arylene ether) and a solvent, combining the poly (arylene ether) solution with an antisolvent to form a poly(arylene ether) dispersion comprising a poly(arylene ether) solid, separating the poly(arylene ether) solid from the poly(arylene ether) dispersion to form an isolated poly(arylene ether) solid, determining a particle size distribution of the poly(arylene ether) solid prior to separating the poly(arylene ether) solid from the poly(arylene ether) dispersion, and adjusting a precipitation parameter in response to the particle size distribution. Although the measured particle size distribution is very different from the particle size distribution of the solid poly(arylene ether) ultimately isolated, it is useful for controlling the process. The method may be automated to rapidly adjust precipitation conditions in response to the particle size distribution measurements. An apparatus for carrying out the method is also described.

摘要: A method for the manufacture of a polycarbonate which comprises reacting a carbonate precursor with a dihydroxy compound in the presence of an aqueous base in an inert organic solvent optionally containing a molecular weight regulator to form an oligomeric polycarbonate, wherein the reaction between the dihydroxy compound and the carbonate precursor is about 80 to about 99% completed; removing the inert organic solvent and the aqueous base to isolate the oligomeric polycarbonate; and transesterifying the isolated oligomeric polycarbonate to form a polymeric polycarbonate at a temperature and pressure effective to remove trace amounts of residual solvent. This method eliminates some of the problems of the prior art such as the removal of solvent from high molecular weight polycarbonate, which is both cumbersome, energy intensive and expensive.
