A high-pressure fluid control solenoid valve assembly for use with a spill type fuel injection pump of an internal combustion engine, comprises an actuator portion (101) including a solenoid (8, 9), a stator (7) and an armature (14), and a valve portion (102) including a pilot valve (40, 41) and a main valve (42, 43) where the valve portion (102) is spaced apart from the actuator portion (101) and is responsive to the movement of the armature (14) via a rod (14) connected to the armature (14) and extends axially in a bore of the stator (7) which is cylindrical hollow. The pilot valve (40, 41) is coaxial with and telescopically received in the main valve (42, 43) so that two fluid chambers (54, 51) are formed inside and outside, respectively a spool (42) of the main valve such that the main valve is continuously kept closed irrespective of the fluid pressure in these chambers as long as the pilot valve is closed. The pilot valve comprises a needle (40) which is arranged to be pressed by the rod (13) to close the pilot valve on energization of the solenoid (8, 9), where the needle (40) is normally biased in valve-opening direction. On deenergization, the pilot valve opens causing the main valve to spill fuel thus terminating the fuel injection.

A distribution type fuel injection pump includes a control cylindrical bore into which a control plunger is fitted. The control plunger partitions the control cylindrical bore into first and second chambers. The same pressure as that of fuel in the pumping chamber (which serves to feed fuel) is transmitted to the first chamber, while fuel is supplied to the second chamber through a control passage. An electromagnetic valve is arranged in the control passage and the amount of fuel with which the second chamber is filled is adjusted by controlling the electromagnetic valve.

An electromagnetic valve opens and closes a fuel return passage (23, 24) of a fuel injection pump, to control a time of fuel return when fuel compressed by a plunger (12) of the fuel injection pump is overflowed from a high-pressure fuel chamber (19) to a low-pressure fuel chamber (11). A valve needle (36) causes a reciprocative movement in an axial direction thereof to open or close the fuel return passage (23, 24). A terminal (46), supplying electric current to the electromagnetic valve, is disposed along the axial direction of the valve needle (36). A plate-like armature (43), connected to one end of the valve needle (36), has a through hole (43a) allowing the terminal (46) to enter therein and causing a reciprocative movement together with the valve needle (36). The outer periphery of the armature (43) extends radially further than the terminal (46). A coil (44), connected to the terminal (46), is disposed in confronting relation to a side surface of the armature (43) located adjacent to the valve needle (36).
