The turbocharger includes a turbine and a compressor, and a non-contact seal positioned between an oil cavity and one of the turbine and the compressor. In one embodiment, the testing apparatus includes a regulatable air input configured to couple to an outlet of the oil cavity, the regulatable air input coupled to an air supply, and a flow restrictor with at least one pressure gauge coupled to the regulatable air input. The kit includes media embodying instructions that specify correlating an amount of flow to a degree, rate, or amount of leakage past the non-contact seal.
