A mechanical seal for use in a rotary rock bit comprises a leg seal ring positioned within a recessed portion of a leg forming a seal cavity. The leg seal comprises one surface partially engaged by a resilient material and an opposite surface comprising a first sealing surface. The mechanical seal also comprises cone seal ring positioned within a portion of a cone forming the seal cavity. The cone seal comprises one surface positioned within and attached to a recessed portion of the cone and another surface comprising a second sealing surface engaging the first sealing surface. The portion of the leg seal ring engaged by the resilient material engages a back face of the leg which includes a ramp, serving to urge the first sealing surface against the adjacent second sealing surface and create a sealing engagement. The first and second sealing surfaces are made from different hard materials each having a similar hardness of greater than 1000, and each material selected has a Knoop hardness difference of about 400 or less. The first and second sealing surfaces may be formed from materials the same as or different than materials forming the leg seal ring and cone seal ring, respectively.

An improved hard facing for teeth and other surfaces of milled tooth rock bits comprises steel in the range of from 18 to 32 percent by weight, and filler in the range of from 68 to 82 percent by weight. The filler is cemented tungsten carbide and cast tungsten carbide free, and includes greater than 95 percent by weight single crystal monotungsten carbide particles. The single crystal monotungsten carbide particles have a particle size in the range of from 200 to 500 mesh and, preferably in the range of from 200 to 325.

A rock bit employs cemented tungsten carbide inserts for engaging a rock formation for drilling oil wells or the like. The cemented tungsten carbide inserts have as a binder phase a cobalt base alloy including from 10 to 35% by weight nickel, from 3 to 10% by weight chromium, from 1 to 6% by weight of molybdenum, and a balance primarily of cobalt. A particularly preferred composition has 6% by weight chromium, 17% by weight nickel, 4% by weight molybdenum and a balance of cobalt. Wear resistance is enhanced without loss of toughness in the inserts.

A drill bit has means at one end for connecting the bit to a drill string and a plurality of inserts at the other end for crushing the rock to be drilled. The inserts have a cemented tungsten carbide body partially embedded in the drill bit and at least two layers at the protruding drilling portion of the insert. The outermost layer contains polycrystalline diamond and particles of carbide or carbonitride of elements selected from the group consisting of W, Ti, Ta, Cr, Mo, Cb, V, Hf and Zr. The remaining layers adjacent the polycrystalline diamond layer are transition layers each comprising a composite containing diamond crystals, particles of tungsten carbide, and particles of titanium carbonitride. The average size of the diamond particles in the polycrystalline diamond layer is greater than the average size of the carbide or carbonitride particles; and the average size of the diamond particles in the transition layers is greater than the average sizes of the carbide and carbonitride particles. In particular, the transition layers contain particles of carbide and/or carbonitride with average grain sizes of less than one micrometer. The outermost layer of polycrystalline diamond extends along at least a portion of the length of the grip portion of the carbide body embedded in the drill bit.

Disclosed is a single-pass notching and drilling tool. The tool comprises an adaptor having a first threaded end for coupling with a power source, an opposed second threaded end, an enlarged diameter portion adjacent to the first threaded end and having a first abutment face and a mediate portion adjacent to the first axial abutment face and adjacent to the second threaded end. There is also a drill portion joined to the second threaded end of the adaptor and having a second axial abutment face. The tool further comprises a notching tool comprising a body having a central bore rotatably engaging the mediate portion of the adaptor. The notching tool is freely rotatable about the mediate portion independent of the rotation of the adaptor. The axial movement of the notching tool is bounded by the first and second axial abutment faces. Disclosed also is a method of drilling a blast hole with the single-pass notching and drilling tool.
