    摘要: An apparatus for determining relative positioning of first and second objects being relatively movable may include a laser source carried by the first object for generating a source laser beam toward the second object, and a target optical element carried by the second object for generating a first reflected beam and a second diverging reflected beam from the source laser beam. Furthermore, a detector may be carried by the first object for detecting the first reflected beam and the second diverging reflected beam. A controller may also be connected to the detector for determining a range between the detector and target optical element based upon a size of the second diverging reflected beam. The controller may also determine at least one other positional degree of freedom quantity (e.g., lateral/vertical displacement, pitch angle, yaw angle, and/or roll angle) based upon the first reflected beam and the second diverging reflected beam.

    摘要: A sensing apparatus includes an excitation source configured to induce waves in a target, and an optical waveguide interferometer configured to sense the induced waves in the target. The optical waveguide interferometer includes a plurality of optical couplers and interconnecting optical fibers arranged to define a reference arm, a measurement arm, and a probe segment coupled to the reference arm and the measurement arm and having a probe segment end to be positioned adjacent the target. An optical path length adjustor is coupled to the reference arm. A controller cooperates with the path length adjustor and is configured to adjust an optical path length of the reference arm to maintain a constant relationship with respect to an optical path length of the measurement arm.

    摘要: An optical microresonator is formed as a microcylinder and a resonant waveguide on the microcylinder and having a plurality of spaced resonant elements such as circumferential ridges for optically coupling light from an optical source waveguide onto the microcylinder. The resonant elements have a spacing, height and angle to impart a desire polarization and bring in the polarization states into degenerancy. A coating could also be formed over the resonant waveguide and operative with the resonant waveguide and of a refractive index to bring any polarization states into degenerancy.

    摘要: A solid state acoustic travelling wave lens comprises a thin core layer of acoustic and light transmissive material, such as crystalline quartz, compression-bonded between a pair of outer or cladding layers, such as fused silica, having an acoustic velocity that is only slightly higher than (e.g., less than five percent of) that of the core material. The acoustic mode field characteristic of the weakly guiding device contains no spatial variations caused by Fresnel diffraction in an unguided wave device. In a second embodiment, shear stress coupling between the core and cladding layers is inhibited by interposing very thin liquid boundary layers between the core layer and the cladding layers. Such thin liquid boundary layers, which are relatively more compressible than the core and cladding material, allow longitudinal waves to be transmitted across the core/cladding boundary (through the liquid), but prevent transmission of shear waves therebetween.

    摘要: An acoustic impedance-matching transformer includes a tapered acoustic energy transmission (metal) block, having an acoustic impedance less than that of a piezo-electric transducer in a metric direction toward that of the acoustic propagation medium of the waveguide, and by an amount that allows tailoring of the relative spatial dimensions of mating surfaces of the transducer and the block, so as to provide efficient broadband coupling of acoustic energy. The surface area of the end face of the block engaging the transducer is a corresponding fraction of the area of the transducer. The tapered block focuses acoustic energy toward the input aperture of the waveguide channel. The taper is determined in accordance with difference between the acoustic impedance of the aluminum block and that of a second acoustic wave propagation element, such as a quarter-wave section of plexiglass, interposed between the waveguide channel and the tapered block.

    摘要: An adaptive filter having a correlation weighting structue having a single Bragg cell, acting as a tapped delay line and having an input and an output, the Bragg cell intensity modulating a write laser beam for computing correlation values, and modulating a read laser field strength for multiplying the correlation values by delayed signal values. A photorefractive element is arranged such that substantial portions of diffracted and undiffracted light components from the single Bragg cell overlap within the photorefractive element. A write laser is intensity modulated by an error signal to produce an optical write signal that is received at the photorefractive element input and which writes correlation coefficients in the photorefractive element. A read laser produces a light signal, a portion of which is diffracted by the single Bragg cell, the portion of the light signal that is not diffracted by the single Bragg cell being partially diffracted by the photorefractive element. A photodetector having an input receives the portion of the light signal that is diffracted by the single Bragg cell and the portion of the read laser light signal that is diffracted by the photorefractive crystal, the photodetector output producing a filtered signal. The read laser light is isolated from the write laser light such that only the read laser light reaches the photodetector.
