A global motion estimation method between an incoming frame F(n) of a sequence of frames and a large static image M(n−1), which is constructed from previous frames F(1), F(2), . . . , F(n−1) of the video sequence, uses a motion model based on a two-dimensional perspective transform that contains eight motion parameters. The eight motion parameters are the coordinates of the four vertices of the incoming frame. The motion estimation method enables any displacement of the four corners of the original rectangular image to fit the next one by optimizing a cost function. Useful applications include those related to MPEG-4 and, more especially, to MPEG-7 standard, such as sprite generation or mosaicing.

The invention relates to a new method of reconstruction of tridimensional scenes. While conventional methods are often limited to the 3D reconstruction of the bounding volume of the concerned objects, the proposed method of recovery of a 3D geometric model from 2D views taken by one single camera, giving an information even about the parts which are hidden in each view, is implemented according to a first depth labeling step, implemented in a sub-system (11) and including initialization and projection sub-steps followed by a refinement process, and to a second reconstruction step, implemented in a sub-system (12). By means of a close cooperation of the 3D depth maps thus obtained for two views of a scene, a 3D model is identified and extracted.

An encoding method applied to an input video sequence corresponding to successive scenes subdivided into successive video object planes (VOPs) is provided that generates, for coding all the video objects of said scenes, a coded bit stream the content of which is described in terms of separate channels and constituted of encoded video data in which each data item is described by a bitstream syntax that allows the recognition and decoding of all the elements of the content. The syntax comprises an additional syntactic information provided for describing independently the type of temporal prediction of the various channels. The additional information is a syntactic element placed at the slice level or the macroblock level in the coded bitstream, and its meaning is either specific for each present channel or shared by all existing channels.

A video encoder and decoder are provided for processing a sequence of animated pictures in such a way that an interactive game, such as a puzzle for instance, may be played. Each picture of a movie sequence is divided into a predetermined number of pieces that are then randomly coded (according to the MPEG-4 standard), transmitted and/or stored, decoded and displayed. It is then possible to play with the pieces to reorder them while they are in motion (with possible associated audio), according to predefined rules and ends of scenarios. The left and right buttons of a mouse, or a similar control device, are used to displace either one piece, or a group of attached pieces respectively, in order to verify if the proposed location for a piece is free and possible (no contradiction with any other surrounding piece) and then to drop said piece on the new spot, or, on the contrary, if some contradiction is detected, send back the piece (or, respectively, the group of attached pieces) to its previous location.
