A hydrodynamic bearing comprises electromagnetic means consisting of radially-arranged polepieces 4a-4f and windings 5a-5f surrounding a magnetically-permeable cylinder 9; this arrangement causes vibration of one bearing member 8 relative to the other 6 in a direction which includes a component normal to the bearing surfaces such that there is an increase in pressure in the gas film between the bearing surfaces which maintains the bearing clearance. Adjacent pairs of polepieces may be wired in series such that they are of opposite polarity, each pair being connected to each phase of a three-phase A.C. supply.
