A method for selecting a channel for group communications in a conventional multi-channel communication system comprises receiving, for a plurality of channels in the multi-channel communication system, a talkgroup assignment list for the channels that identifies a set of talkgroups assigned to use the corresponding channels. A subscriber unit receives talkgroup assignment lists for multiple different channels, determines a desired talkgroup, and selects a channel assigned to the desired talkgroup using the received talkgroup assignment. The talkgroup assignment list is developed for at least one channel in the multi-channel communication system and identifies a set of talkgroups assigned to use the corresponding channel. The list is transmitted for the channel to a subscriber unit and is used by the subscriber unit to register with the system and affiliate with a talkgroup supported by the channel in the conventional multi-channel communication system.

A method for indicating the status of communication channels assigned to a talkgroup includes: determining the channels in various sites in a conventional communication system that service a talkgroup for media transmissions between subscribers of the talkgroup; receiving notification of the status of transmission activity on the channels; and based on the notification, providing an indication of the status of the channels assigned to the talkgroup so that the talkgroup or subscribers of the talkgroup can choose to proceed with a talkgroup communication. The notification may be received by an infrastructure device in an RF site or a central controlling entity. The indication may be that the channel is free for transmissions or is busy.

A method and apparatus for frame synchronization in a communication network is provided. The communication network includes a plurality of base stations. The method includes determining the start time of reception of a downlink frame received from each of at least a second base station. The method also includes determining the radio frequency propagation delay associated with the downlink frame received from the each of at least a second base station. Further, the method includes determining the reference downlink frame transmission time at the first base station, based on the reception start time of the downlink frame and the radio frequency propagation delay associated with one of the at least a second base station.

A role-based operational directory capable of facilitating identification of and communication with key contact personnel during an operation is disclosed. Role-specific directory instances are created in the directory. The role-specific instances are created by a system operator and list the roles involved in an operation and the associations between the roles. The role-specific directory instance is advertised to a selected user, and the selected user associates with the role-specific directory instance. If the user is a key contact for the operation or is otherwise required or allowed to be associated with a role in the operation, the user also associates with a role from the list of roles in the role-specific directory instance. The directory instance is dynamically updated, modified, and tailored as necessary, and transmitted to the communication devices of the selected users of the role-specific directory instance.

A method and apparatus for simulcasting within a communication system is provided herein. During operation, each base site will be equipped with a plurality of radios capable of transmitting on various frequencies. Base sites within the communication system will be capable of communicating on a predetermined number of channels, which may differ among base sites. A number of channels will be shared by the base sites. When a simulcast is desired, the participants are located, and a common channel is determined for communication. Thus, call participant location information is used to determine the best channel to use to meet the group's coverage needs.

Embodiments include a trunking site base station receiving a first base station control packet over a network and, in response, transmitting a first subscriber control packet over a subscriber control channel at a first transmission time that is determined based on a transmission schedule. The first subscriber control packet includes a frame sync, a network ID, and a payload. Responsive to determining that a second base station control packet has not been received before a first timeout (or based on another trigger), the base station transmits a second subscriber control packet at a second transmission time that is determined based on the transmission schedule. The second subscriber control packet includes the frame sync and the network ID. The second subscriber control packet also may include a payload indicating a delay period for a subscriber radio to wait before making an attempt to register with a different trunking site.
