An image forming apparatus for forming an image of a partial area of an entire image frame includes an apparatus for designating a part of a frame and apparatus for selecting an image formation operation for the predetermined area designated by the designating means or an image formation operation for the entire area. The image data corresponding to the predetermined area is read out and a histogram, indicating intensity distribution, is produced corresponding thereto. A gamma conversion characteristic is determined based on a cumulative frequency distribution produced from the histogram. The image data read out is converted in accordance with the determined gamma conversion characteristic. An image is formed on the basis of the converted image data representing the predetermined part of the frame or the entire frame. In such a partial printing, the contrast or gamma characteristic of the partial image may be appropriately corrected by a correction of the gamma characteristic according to the selection of the partial area.

There is provided a liquid jet recording apparatus comprising: recording heads whose recording densities vary in response to drive signals; drive circuits to drive the recording heads; a control circuit to output the drive signals through the drive circuits to the recording heads; and a timing pulse generator to supply a drive timing pulse for the recording heads to the drive circuits. During the recording interval, the timing pulse generator supplies the drive timing pulse even when all of or a part of the recording heads are not driven. At this time, the control circuit controls the levels of the drive signals for the recording heads which are not driven to less than the coloring threshold value of those recording heads. As a result, the multihead drive control section in the multihead recording apparatus such as a full color printer can be constituted by a simple circuit.

When a black component of a color picture data is smaller than a predetermined value, the black component is expressed by using the combination of cyan, magenta and yellow colorants. When the black component is larger than the predetermined value, it is expressed by alternately using the black colorant and the three colorant combination. In another embodiment, picture quality can be enhanced by using a black colorant having a higher density than the cyan, magenta and yellow colorants.

At least two colorent densities are used for at least some of the colors. When there is more than one combination of colorants which can represent a given density in a picture element, the combination having the largest number of dots is selected. In a preferred embodiment, more colorants of different densities are used for cyan and magenta then are used for black and yellow.

A color image reproducing method uses at least cyan, magenta and yellow colorants, in which at least one color among them has a plurality of kinds of coloring densities. According to this method, various microdots having different densities are formed; sizes of these dots are variably controlled; one pixel consisting of a plurality of cells is provided; the frequency of occurrences in one pixel of the microdots of the high density colorant and of the microdots of the low density colorant is varied in accordance with a reproduction density; and the thick microdot and thin microdot have sizes so as to reproduce almost the same reflection optical density. An intermediate region which is not included in any of the density reproduction ranges of the high and low density colorants is set, and this mid-density region is reproduced using both of the microdots of the high density colorant and the microdots of the low density colorant. A dither matrix method may be used for this reproduction. As a result, false profiles can be prevented and a color picture image with high gradient and high quality is derived.

A video signal processing method and apparatus retrieves pixel signals by sampling an input video signal consisting of a plurality of horizontal scanning lines. In this method, the ratio of the number of vertical pixels to the number of horizontal scanning lines is set into for example 2 or less; in the vertical direction, the pixel signals of the vertical pixels are obtained by the interpolation on the basis of the pixel signals sampled from a plurality of horizontal scanning lines; while in the horizontal direction, the input video signal is sampled at the horizontal sampling frequency to be determined by that ratio. In the above interpolation processing, the ratio of the number of recording pixels to the number of original pixels in the direction of height or width of an image picture is set into ##EQU1## (where, n and M are positive integers). There is also provided a video signal recording system for recording the image picture in accordance with the pixel signals to be obtained by the sampling circuit on a recording paper. According to the present invention, it is possible to obtain and print out high-quality image pictures with desired various sizes without changing dot densities by means of a simple processing circuit.
