Abstract: Apparatus and a method are disclosed for calibrating and tuning a wavelength-tunable semiconductor laser. In an assembly, the wavemeter is integrated with the laser, and plural temperature sensors are coupled to plural, spatially separated functional elements of the wavemeter by thermal conduction. A tuning circuit generates tuning signals for the laser that are responsive to wavemeter output signals and to temperature-indication signals from the plural temperature sensors. Temperature effects on the tuning can be mitigated.

Abstract: A planar optical resonator capable of parametrically generating frequency combs includes two optical waveguide cores forming inner and outer loops, the resonator having two sections, in which laterally adjacent segments of the cores are resonantly optically coupled to each other at two separate wavelength regions causing separate peaks in the second order dispersion. The resonator sections may be configured to suppress integrated dispersion of the resonator in a broad spectral range favorably for generating a spectrally uniform frequency comb.

Abstract: Various example embodiments presented herein may be configured to support a passive optical network (PON) including an optical line terminal (OLT) and a set of optical network units (ONUs) where the OLT includes a coherent optical receiver configured to support reception of upstream optical bursts by the ONUs based on use of a wavemeter to control tuning of a local oscillator to track the wavelengths of the upstream optical bursts from the ONUs. In the coherent optical receiver, the local oscillator may be configured to provide a local oscillator signal for mixing with an upstream optical signal of an ONU and the wavemeter may be configured to determine a wavelength of the upstream optical signal of the ONU and instruct the local oscillator to tune the local oscillator signal to the wavelength of the upstream optical signal of the ONU. The coherent optical receiver may be used in other contexts.
