    Abstract: An illustrative example embodiment of an elevator system includes a cab configured to accommodate at least one passenger or item inside the cab. A motorized module includes a base, a connector supported on the base and at least one drive member supported on the base. The connector is configured to selectively establish a releasable connection between the motorized module and the cab. The drive member is configured to engage a vertical surface, climb along the vertical surface to selectively cause vertical movement of the base, and selectively prevent movement of the base when the drive member remains in a selected position relative to the vertical surface. At least one motor is associated with the drive member to selectively cause the drive member to climb along the vertical surface. The motorized module is vertically movable independent of the cab when the motorized module is released from the cab.

    Abstract: An illustrative example embodiment of an elevator system includes a plurality of elevator cars, a plurality of car identifiers, a plurality of location identifiers, and a controller. Each of the car identifiers is associated with one of the elevator cars and provides a unique identification to the associated elevator car. Each of the location identifiers is configured to be situated in a selected location of the elevator system and provides a unique identification to the selected location. The controller determines a location of each of the elevator cars based on at least one indication of the associated car identifier being at the location of a corresponding one of the location identifiers.

    Abstract: A braking system for a hoisted structure includes a guide rail configured to guide the hoisted structure. Also included is a plurality of brake members operatively coupled to the hoisted structure, each of the brake members having a brake surface configured to frictionally engage the guide rail, the brake members moveable between a braking position and a non-braking position. Further included is a plurality of electronic brake member actuation mechanisms operatively coupled to the brake members and configured to actuate the brake members from the non-braking position to the braking position. Yet further included is a load sensing device operatively coupled to the hoisted structure, the load sensing device configured to detect a weight of the hoisted structure, wherein the load sensing device is in operative communication with the electronic brake member actuation mechanisms, wherein the number of actuated mechanisms is dependent on the weight of the hoisted structure.
