摘要:
Optical performance measurements are taken in an optical network and displayed in a form that allows an operator to enter fault information related to the measurements, or to automatically generate fault alarms to the operator, based on processing of the measurements. The optical measurements may be individual power measurements taken for each light-path at various points in each node it traverses, such as amplifiers, multiplexers/demultiplexers or at an interface with another node.

A communication network comprising at least one first terminal, at least one second terminal, a plurality of links, and at least first and second nodes. The first node is bidirectionally coupled to the first terminal through at least a first one of the links, and also is bidirectionally coupled to the second terminal through at least a second link and the second node. Preferably, the first node comprises a plurality of communication paths, each of which is coupled at a first end thereof to at least one corresponding first link. Second ends of the communication paths are all coupled to the second link, through a multiplexing device, and route signals between the first and second links. The first node also preferably comprises at least one alternate communication path having a first end coupled through the multiplexing device to the second link, at least one switch that is coupled to the alternate communication path, and a detector for detecting a failure in at least one of the communication paths. A controller is coupled to the detector and the switch. The controller is responsive to the detector detecting a failure in at least one of the communication paths for controlling the switch to couple the alternate communication path to a corresponding first link, thereby enabling a signal to be routed between that first link and the second link through the alternate communication path.

Methods and apparatus for managing static and dynamic optical network configurations to enable mapping an actual optical network or validating an expected optical network are provided. In one embodiment a validation method includes the step of selecting an optical path having a plurality of nodes from a database defining an expected optical network. A list of detected pilot tones from each node associated with the selected optical path is generated. An expected list of pilot tones associated with each node of the selected optical path is generated. Comparison of the expected and detected lists identifies any mismatched nodes. Another method includes the step of setting a first pilot tone source to have a first pilot tone value. All other network pilot tone sources are set to have another pilot tone value. An optical path associated with the first pilot tone source is then mapped by identifying each node of the network having the first pilot tone value. Extraneous information can be applied to provide greater assurances as to likelihood of possible actual optical paths during the mapping process. Methods of re-configuring network pilot tone sources to preserve mapping and validation abilities when adding nodes, adding optical paths, or even adding another network to a pre-existing network are also provided.

An optical communication system comprising plural optical communication paths, a passive optical coupler, and at least one optical node. The passive optical coupler has a plurality of inputs coupled through the passive optical coupler to an output of the passive optical coupler, and each input is coupled in a corresponding one of the optical communication paths. Each optical node comprises plural optical line terminals, each of which is interposed in a corresponding at least one of the optical communication paths. Each optical line terminal is operable to either (a) substantially prevent an optical signal propagating in that corresponding at least one optical communication path from reaching a corresponding input of the passive optical coupler through the at least one optical communication path, or (b) permit the optical signal to propagate in that corresponding at least one optical communication path towards the corresponding input of the passive optical coupler.

A wavelength division multiplexed optical communication system includes a plurality of optical line terminals which may be part of separate in service networks, each having a line interface and an all-optical pass-through interface including a plurality of pass-through optical ports, and each also including a plurality of local optical ports which are connectable to client equipment and an optical multiplexer/demultiplexer for multiplexing/demultiplexing optical wavelengths. The optical multiplexer/demultiplexer may include one or more stages for inputting/outputting individual wavelengths or bands of a predetermined number of wavelengths, or a combination of bands and individual wavelengths. At least one of the pass-through optical ports of an optical line terminal of one network may be connected to at least one of the pass-through optical ports of an optical line terminal of another network to form an optical path from the line interface of the optical line terminal of the one network to the line interface of the optical line terminal of the another network to form a merged network. The use of such optical line terminals allows the upgrading and merging of the separate networks while in service.

A switch core is set forth that comprises a plurality of duplex switches that are interconnected with a interconnection fabric to implement, for example, strictly non-blocking operation of the switch core for reciprocal traffic. In one embodiment, an N-way reciprocal switch is implemented. The N-way reciprocal switch comprises a plurality of duplex switches numbering N of at least a 1×(N−1) switch type (e.g., the duplex switches have at least N−1 ports available for connection to implement the interconnection fabric). The interconnection fabric interconnects the plurality of duplex switches so that each duplex switch is connected to every other duplex switch used in the interconnection fabric by a single connection. A similar architecture using switches numbering N of at least a 1×N switch type are also set forth.

A similar architecture using switches numbering N of at least a 1×N switch type are also set forth. Still further, a plurality of duplex switches are used to implement an (n, m)-way switch that, in turn, can be used to construct a recursive LM-way switch core and/or recursively expand an existing Clos switch core.
