    Abstract: There is provided an aerosol generating device for use with a heat source and an aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol generating device comprises an elongate body extending between an upstream end and a downstream end, the elongate body having an upstream recess for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate and a heat source. The aerosol generating device further comprises an annular cutting edge disposed at the upstream end of the upstream recess. The aerosol generating device further comprises an ejection element disposed within the elongate body, the ejection element being movable between a first position and a second position, the ejection element extending further into the upstream recess in the second position than in the first position. There is further provided a pack for use with the aerosol generating device.

    Abstract: There is provided a cartridge assembly (10) for use in an aerosol-generating system, the cartridge assembly comprising: a cartridge (12) comprising at least a first compartment (18) extending along a longitudinal axis, the first compartment comprising an aerosol-generating compound and being sealed at a first end by a first frangible barrier (22) extending in respective planes transverse to the longitudinal axis; and at least a first piercing member (38) configured to rupture the first frangible barrier (22). The first piercing member (38) comprises: a first piercing body (40) having a cross-sectional surface area at least about 40 percent of a cross-sectional area of the at least one compartment (19); and a first channel (381, 382) extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cartridge through the first piercing body (40), the first channel (381, 382) having an inlet and an outlet. The first piercing member (38) is movable along the longitudinal axis from a first position to a second position, wherein, when the first piercing member (38) is in the first position, the first piercing body (40) is retracted from the plane of the first frangible barrier (22); and wherein, when the first piercing member (38) is in the second position, the first piercing body (40) extends into the at least one compartment (18) through the plane of the first frangible barrier (22), and the at least one compartment (18) is in fluid communication with the inlet and outlet of the first channel (281, 382). The at least one compartment (18) is sealed at an end opposite the first end by a second frangible barrier (26), the cartridge assembly (10) further comprising a second piercing member (44) configured to rupture the second frangible barrier (26).

    Abstract: There is provided a cartridge assembly (10) for use in an aerosol-generating system, the cartridge assembly comprising: a cartridge (12) comprising at least a first compartment (18) extending along a longitudinal axis, the first compartment comprising an aerosol-generating compound and being sealed at a first end by a first frangible barrier (22) extending in respective planes transverse to the longitudinal axis; and at least a first piercing member (38) configured to rupture the first frangible barrier (22). The first piercing member (38) comprises: a first piercing body (40) having a cross-sectional surface area at least about 40 percent of a cross-sectional area of the at least one compartment (19); and a first channel (381, 382) extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cartridge through the first piercing body (40), the first channel (381, 382) having an inlet and an outlet. The first piercing member (38) is movable along the longitudinal axis from a first position to a second position, wherein, when the first piercing member (38) is in the first position, the first piercing body (40) is retracted from the plane of the first frangible barrier (22); and wherein, when the first piercing member (38) is in the second position, the first piercing body (40) extends into the at least one compartment (18) through the plane of the first frangible barrier (22), and the at least one compartment (18) is in fluid communication with the inlet and outlet of the first channel (281, 382). The at least one compartment (18) is sealed at an end opposite the first end by a second frangible barrier (26), the cartridge assembly (10) further comprising a second piercing member (44) configured to rupture the second frangible barrier (26).

    Abstract: A reclosable cartridge assembly (10) for use in an aerosol-generating system comprises: a cartridge (12) extending longitudinally between end walls (22, 26); a housing (30, 32) enclosing the cartridge (12) and comprising: an upstream portion with an end wall (22) comprising an opening (42); and a downstream housing portion (32) with an end wall comprising an opening (44). One of the housing portions (30, 32) is rotatably fitted onto the cartridge (12). One of the cartridge end walls (22, 26) comprises a rupturable portion (38, 40) separable from the remainder of the end wall to expose an opening (42, 44) in the end wall. The rotatable housing portion (30, 32) is adapted to engage the rupturable portion (38, 40) such that, upon rotation from a storage position to a dispensing position, the housing portion (30, 32) breaks off the rupturable portion (38, 40) and exposes the opening (42, 44) in the end wall. When the housing portion (30, 32) is in the dispensing position, the opening (46, 48) in the housing portion (30, 32) is in fluid communication with the exposed opening (42, 44) in the cartridge (12). The housing portion (30, 32) is further reversibly rotatable between the dispensing position and a closed position. When in the closed position, the end wall of the housing portion (30, 32) obstructs the exposed opening (42, 44) in the cartridge.

    Abstract: There is provided an aerosol generating device for use with a heat source and an aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol generating device comprises an elongate body having a longitudinal surface extending between an upstream end and a downstream end. The elongate body comprises an opening at the downstream end of the elongate body, and a cavity for receiving a heat source and an aerosol-forming substrate. The cavity is accessible through an aperture in the longitudinal surface of the elongate body. The upstream end of the cavity is closed and the downstream end of the cavity is in fluid communication with the opening. The aerosol generating device further comprises a closing member movable relative to the elongate body between an open position in which the aperture in open, and an experience position in which the aperture is closed by a first portion of the closing member. There is further provided an aerosol generating system comprising the aerosol generating device.

    Abstract: An inhalation counter (350, 450, 550) for an inhalation system (100) is provided. The inhalation system comprises a fluid flow passage (322) and the inhalation counter comprises an escapement wheel (352, 452), a biasing means (354, 454) for incrementing the escapement wheel, a conversion mechanism which, in use, is configured to perform a first action in response to a temporary increase in fluid flow rate through the fluid flow passage, and an anchor (356, 456).     Abstract: A reclosable cartridge assembly (10) for use in an aerosol-generating system comprises: a cartridge (12) extending longitudinally between end walls (22, 26); a housing (30, 32) enclosing the cartridge (12) and comprising: an upstream portion with an end wall (22) comprising an opening (42); and a downstream housing portion (32) with an end wall comprising an opening (44). One of the housing portions (30, 32) is rotatably fitted onto the cartridge (12). One of the cartridge end walls (22, 26) comprises a rupturable portion (38, 40) separable from the remainder of the end wall to expose an opening (42, 44) in the end wall. The rotatable housing portion (30, 32) is adapted to engage the rupturable portion (38, 40) such that, upon rotation from a storage position to a dispensing position, the housing portion (30, 32) breaks off the rupturable portion (38, 40) and exposes the opening (42, 44) in the end wall. When the housing portion (30, 32) is in the dispensing position, the opening (46, 48) in the housing portion (30, 32) is in fluid communication with the exposed opening (42, 44) in the cartridge (12). The housing portion (30, 32) is further reversibly rotatable between the dispensing position and a closed position. When in the closed position, the end wall of the housing portion (30, 32) obstructs the exposed opening (42, 44) in the cartridge.
