    Abstract: A container for an aerosol-generating device is provided, including a first compartment including a nicotine source, a second compartment including a delivery enhancing compound, and a transfer section disposed between the first compartment and the second compartment, the first and second compartments being formed from a laminate material including at least one layer of cardboard material and at least one layer of polymeric material, the layer of polymeric material forming an internal surface of the compartments. There is also provided a container where at least one of the first compartment and the second compartment comprises a recessed end, wherein the transfer section is formed by a recess when one end of the first compartment abuts one end of the second compartment. An aerosol-generating system is also provided, including an aerosol-generating device configured to receive the container.

    Abstract: A method of producing an aerosol-generating element for an aerosol-generating article or system is provided, the method including the steps of: preparing a matrix polymer solution including a matrix-forming polymer in water; adding a plurality of aerosol-generating formulation components to the matrix polymer solution to form an aerosol-generating solution, in which the aerosol-generating formulation components include a polyhydric alcohol and at least one alkaloid or cannabinoid, and in which the aerosol-generating solution includes at least 0.5 percent by weight of the at least one alkaloid or cannabinoid; forming a discrete portion of the aerosol-generating solution; adding the discrete portion of the aerosol-generating solution to a cross-linking solution of multivalent cations to cross-link the matrix-forming polymer; and removing the aerosol-generating element from the cross-linking solution and drying the aerosol-generating element.

    Abstract: An aerosol-generating element for an aerosol-generating article or system is provided, the element including: a solid continuous matrix structure; and an aerosol-generating formulation dispersed within the structure, in which the formulation is trapped within the structure and releasable from the structure upon heating of the element, in which the structure is an alginate matrix, in which the formulation consists of: nicotine from 1% by weight to 4% by weight of a total weight of the element, glycerin from 60% by weight to 80% by weight of the total weight of the element, a carboxylic acid from 0.5% by weight to 4% by weight of the total weight of the element, and balance water, in which the formulation dispersed within the structure is at least about 80% by weight of a total weight of the element, and in which the element includes less than 15% by weight of water.

    Abstract: There is provided a smoking article (100) incorporating an additive delivery system. The additive delivery system comprises a frangible capsule (110) comprising a breakable shell containing a liquid core. The shell can be broken by means of a pressure to release a single burst of the liquid core. Further, the additive delivery system comprises a sustained-release liquid delivery material (111) comprising a liquid composition. The liquid composition is releasable in discrete amounts from the liquid delivery material upon compression of the liquid delivery material so as to selectively combine the first and second additive. The frangible capsule and the sustained-release liquid delivery material are spaced apart, such that a consumer can separately and selectively activate the release of additive from either component of the delivery system.

    Abstract: A smoking article (10) incorporates a liquid release component of a sustained release liquid delivery material (20) comprising a closed matrix structure having a polymer matrix defining a plurality of domains. A liquid composition is trapped within the domains and is releasable from the closed matrix structure upon compression of the material. The polymer matrix is formed of one or more polysaccharides cross-linked by multivalent cations. The concentration of multivalent cations in the closed matrix structure varies such that along a line extending through the liquid release component from the outer surface of the closed matrix structure to the centre of mass of the liquid release component, the highest concentration of multivalent cations within 250 microns from the outer surface is at least 1.5 times the highest concentration of multivalent cations within 500 microns from the centre of mass.
