摘要: In the production of high-quality flat glass by the float process, tridymite-frost stone defects are safely avoided by providing burners in the refiner zone of the furnace to shield the crown of that portion of the furnace from contact with alkali vapors, and at the same time providing not only a barrier that substantially separates the refiner-zone headspace from the melter headspace but also preferably a means associated with refiner-zone headspace for exhausting or venting it.

摘要: SUBSTANCES ARE MIXED INTO LIQUID FLOWING VISCOUSLY IN A CHANNEL OR PASSAGE BY MEANS OF GAS-CURTAIN MIXER DEVICES OF THE KIND TAUGHT IN BRITISH PAT. NO. 1,171,133. TWO SUCH DEVICES ARE USED, EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY OF THE CHANNEL OR PASSAGE AND AT AN ANGLE OF 10 TO 80 DEGREES WITH RESPECT TO THE FLOW OF LIQUID. THE UPSTREAM MIXER DEVICE EXTENDS ONLY ABOUT 88 TO 98.5 PERCENT OF THE WAY ACROSS THE PASSAGE OR CHANNEL; THE DOWNSTREAM MIXER DEVICE EXTENDS ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE CHANNEL. THIS YIELDS AN IMPROVED MIXING ACTION. THE FOREGOING CONCEPT IS APPLIED TO THE MIXING OF COLORANT INTO MOLTEN GLASS TRAVELING IN THE FOREHEARTH OF A CONTAINER-GLASS TANK. THIS REQUIRES PARTICULAR CONDITIONS OF THE USE OF THE MIXER DEVICES WITH RESPECT TO GAS-IMPINGEMENT ANGLE, SPACING BETWEEN THE DEVICES, AND ORIENTATION ANGLE OF THE DEVICES WITH RESPECT TO THE FLOW OF THE GLASS.

摘要: A silica-rich, volatiles-deficient surface layer is removed from highly viscous glass, near a forming means (rolls or the like). There is used a weir of less-than-usual depth that contains a platinum member that provides a substantially unchanging weir depth; at the same time, Venturi means control the amount of hot gases removed from the glass-melting furnace, to maintain or control the flow of the highly viscous glass. With the invention, it is possible to drain off the silica-rich surface of a highly viscous glass, losing only about 10 percent of the furnace throughput, rather than accepting the higher losses (about 30 percent) required in accordance with previous practices.

摘要: Cooling of flat glass in a continuous glass-melting furnace from at least two locations within the molten glass, in combination with substantial cooling through the bottom of the furnace, enables operation of the furnace at heretofore unattainable throughputs. The use of submerged coolers in combination with bottom cooling reduces convection flow and convolutions in the glass, thereby improving the quality of the resulting glass. Signficantly reduced fuel consumption per ton of glass product is also achieved.

摘要: Forced cooling of the bottom of the glass in the refiner of a continuous glass-melting furnace allows changes in the thermal gradients through the glass. This reduces convection flow and convolutions in the glass and thus improves the quality of glass produced.
