Class 46 A replaceable filter unit comprises a pleated filter body of resin-impregnated paper arranged in tubular form and with the pleats extending substantially radially, end discs of resin-impregnated paper closing off opposite ends of the body, the discs being bonded, by a thermosetting resin adhesive similar to the resin impregnating the filter body, to opposite end edges of the pleats, and having turned-down rims bonded by thermosetting resin adhesive to folds of the pleats. Paper impregnated with phenol formaldehyde resin solution is formed into a tubular body with pleats 12, Fig. 2, extending radially and surrounded by a perforated cover 16. An upper end disc 18 and a lower 19 (not shown) each having a central hole of smaller diameter than the hole 13 extending through the body are coated on one side with a phenol formaldehyde resin cement layer 22. The upper and lower end edges of the pleats 12 are also coated with the same cement and the discs then applied thereto with heat and pressure. Pressure is simultaneously applied to the outer edges 26 of the discs (which extend beyond the periphery of the body) and to the inner edges 24 to turn them down over and secure them to the pleat folds 17 and 15 respectively as shown in Fig. 2. The hole 13 has within it a helical coil 14 (not shown) extending from top to bottom of the unit between the inner rims of the discs against which coil bear the inner longitudinal folds 15 of the pleats. The helical coil 14 may be replaced by a perforated metal cylinder 30, Fig. 3. Instead of the inner edges of the end discs 18a, 19a being turned down, guide rings 32, 31 respectively, held in place by the end discs, are provided. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the arrangement is the same as in Fig. 2 except that the outer.edges of the discs are not turned down over the pleats 17 but merely project slightly beyond them radially.
