[Also in Group XXVII] The oil pump of an I.C. engine forces oil through passages 28, Fig. 1, in an engine block 15 and then through inlet ports 26 in a sealing plate 19 connected to an adapter plate 13 having internal threads 12 for accommodating external threads 11 on a housing 10. The oil passes inwards through a replaceable annular pleated paper element 38 whose lower end-cap fits on an adapter bushing 31, which bushing serves to secure the sealing plate 19 to the block 15 above a discharge passage 29 leading to the engine parts. The filtered oil passes to the interior of the bushing around a relief valve assembly (see below) and forces open a spring-biassed non-return valve 59 (see Fig. 2). On clogging of element 38, unfiltered oil within a cup 42, which oil is in communication with inlet chamber 57 through inlet ports 55 and 56 in the wall of bushing 31, tubes 50 and 51 in a sleeve 45, Fig. 2, and tubes 52 and 53 in the cup (located in sleeve 45), raises a valve disc 43 against a spring 44 and flows through slots 48 in sleeve 45 into the interior of the bushing, and thence past valve 59 to passage 29. In the modification of Fig. 3 (not shown), the threads 11 are formed on a cap secured to casing 10 so that cap and easing are disposed of as well as the element when the latter is exhausted.
