A printing plate is prepared by the method comprising: (a) providing a substrate; and (b) applying by ink jetting to the substrate a fluid composition comprising an acidic polymeric compound, in which the acid groups of the acidic polymeric compound are at least partially neutralized with base, providing a printing plate that is ready-to-use on a press without having to develop it. The printing plate of this invention is capable of extended press run length and advantageously avoids the need of chemical development.

A fluid composition suitable for ink jetting upon a substrate, which includes a copolymer having a low surface energy and a plurality of tertiary amine sites, where the tertiary amine sites are at least partially neutralized with an acid; a nonionic or cationic surfactant; and water. The fluid composition may be used to prepare a printable media comprised of a substrate and an ink receptive thermoplastic image layer supported on the substrate; where the ink receptive layer contains a copolymer having a low surface energy and a plurality of tertiary amine sites, the amine sites being at least partially neutralized with an acid. The invention also relates to a method for preparing a printable media by applying a fluid composition onto a substrate having at least one basic surface by means of an ink jet printing apparatus; where the fluid composition contains a copolymer having a plurality of tertiary amine sites, the amine sites being at least partially neutralized with an acid, and drying the fluid composition.

An aqueous ink composition of an oil-soluble dye in a latex is disclosed. The oil-soluble dye is dispersed in a fortified latex comprising a blend of a distinct dispersed phase in a distinct soluble polymer phase. The soluble polymer generally has a weight-average molecular weight of about 5,000 to about 20,000 and an acid number of about 50 to 400. These novel ink compositions have been found to be especially useful in gravure and flexographic ink applications.

Presensitized lithographic plates are prepared which permit direct formation of printable images on plates by digital computerization without the intervening formation of a photographic image with a quality that allows the plates to be used for high volume printing applications. The lithographic printing plate has a structure which contains a substrate; a positive or negative working photosensitive layer; and a thermally sensitive masking layer which is opaque to the actinic radiation but which is soluble in an aqueous medium. The masking layer contains a heat softenable disperse phase which is insoluble in the aqueous medium; a polymeric continuous phase which is soluble or swellable in the aqueous medium; and a colorant which strongly absorbs radiant energy and converts the radiant energy to heat. In use the masking layer is digitally exposed to a computer controlled laser image so that exposed image areas of the masking are insolublized in the aqueous medium; soluble areas of the mask layer are then removed to form an opaque image mask on the photosensitive layer which is then exposed to actinic radiation passing through the mask to solubilize or insolubilize exposed areas of the photosensitive layer; the photosensitive layer is then developed with the developer liquid to remove the soluble areas and any overlying mask areas to form the lithographic printing plate. Both wet and waterless lithographic printing plates may be digitally prepared in this manner.

An improved fluid printing ink composition suitable for use in laminating inks is provided which comprises a resin, alcohol solvent, and a pigment. In accordance with the present invention the improvement is provided wherein the resin comprises an alcohol soluble polyamide resin having recurring units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is either hydrogen or methyl, R.sub.2 is either a carbocyclic, aralkyl or linear or branched aliphatic group, X is an alkylene group, and Z and Z' each represent an alkyl group which may be the same or different or taken together to represent an alkylene group. The fluid ink compositions of the invention have superior qualities when used as laminating inks, are less expensive than previous laminating inks, and can be used successfully on a wide variety of packaging films.
