    摘要: A ballast (20) for powering one or more gas discharge lamps (70,72,74,76) comprises an inverter (200), an output circuit (300), and an arc protection circuit (400). Arc protection circuit (400) monitors an electrical signal within the output circuit (300). When an arcing condition occurs at the ballast output connections (302,304,306,308,310), the electrical signal includes a high frequency component having a fundamental frequency that is much greater than the normal operating frequency of the inverter (200). In response to the high frequency component exceeding a predetermined threshold, arc protection circuit (400) disables the inverter (200) for a predetermined shutdown period. Arc protection circuit (400) also provides a restart function for periodically attempting to ignite and operate the lamps. Arc protection circuit (400) is preferably realized using a microcontroller integrated circuit (440) with associated discrete circuitry, and is especially well-suited for use in ballasts for powering multiple lamps via a current-fed self-oscillating inverter and an isolated parallel resonant output circuit.

Filament heating and ignition control circuit (600) controls inverter (200) and resonant output circuit (400) during a preheat phase and during a normal operating phase. During the preheat phase, resonant output circuit (400) has an effective resonant capacitance corresponding to the first resonant frequency, and provides a first level of heating to the lamp filaments (72,74). During the normal operating phase, resonant output circuit (400) has an effective resonant capacitance corresponding to the second resonant frequency, and provides a second level of heating to the lamp filaments (72,74) that is negligible in comparison with the first level of heating. Control circuit (600) monitors a voltage within resonant output circuit (400) in order to compensate for any variation in the parameters of resonant output circuit (400) and to ensure that an appropriate level of preheating is provided to lamp filaments (72,74).

When the monitored voltage reaches a specified level, control circuit (600) directs inverter (200) to maintain its operating frequency at a present value for a predetermined period of time, so as to allow output circuit (400) to provide a suitably high voltage for igniting the lamp(s). If the lamp(s) ignite within the predetermined period of time, control circuit (600) ceases controlling inverter (200) to maintain its operating frequency at the present value, so as to allow for normal operation of the lamp(s). Control circuit (600) also provides a lamp stabilization function, in which the inverter operating frequency is prevented from falling below a specified minimum value, and a protective function, in which inverter (200) is deactivated in response to failure of the lamp(s) to ignite within the predetermined period of time.
