Abstract: A Z-pin for increasing a delamination resistance of continuous fibre-reinforced polymer composites, formed of a composite material including a polymer matrix, and a plurality of fibres embedded in the polymer matrix and aligned along the length direction of Z-pin, the fibres having an elongation at break of at least 2% and a tensile strength of at least 5 GPa, the polymer matrix having an elongation at break equal to or greater than the elongation at break of the fibres, and a tensile strength of at least 120 MPa.

Abstract: A composite component comprising a plurality of plies and a plurality of pins extending transversely to the plies, wherein the pins comprise a magnetic material. A magnetic field generator is configured to generate a magnetic field through a thickness direction of the component; and a sensor is provided for detecting a change in magnetic flux indicative of delamination of the plies.

Abstract: A method of detecting delamination of a composite component, the composite component having a plurality of plies and a plurality of z-pins extending through the composite component in a direction transverse to the plies. The method includes measuring one or more material properties of one or more of the z-pins. The measured material properties are compared to reference material properties. An estimation of whether delamination has occurred is performed based upon the comparison of the measured material properties and the reference material properties.
