A power source is coupled to one of the link terminals and is independent from the power supplied from the process link. Communications circuitry is coupled to the power source and link terminals, which transmits a transmitter signal over the process link, through the link terminals. A power sensing component is coupled to at least one of the link terminals and the communications circuitry and senses whether the power supplied by the process link is inadequate to transmit the transmitter signal. A power control component is coupled to the power source, the link terminals and the communications circuitry and selectively applies power from the power source to the communications circuitry for transmitting the transmitter signal when the power sensing component senses there is inadequate power supplied by the process link.

A protection circuit is provided for protecting sensitive electrical field instruments from a transient voltage strike and for ensuring that the instruments will meet safety approval during high potential voltage testing. The first and second wires of a two-wire circuit are connected to a first and second terminal respectively. A first surge arrestor electrically couples a first path between the first and second terminal. An impedance and a transient suppressor are connected in series and electrically couple a second path between the first and second terminal. The second path is coupled in parallel with the first path between the first and second terminal and is coupled closer to the internal components of the electrical instruments to be protected than is the first path. A second surge arrestor is electrically coupled between the second terminal and ground, and has a higher voltage breakdown potential than the first surge arrestor.

A barrier device threadably mounts to a cabling aperture on a field mounted transmitter. The field mounted transmitter receives and transmits signals, and is wholly powered by a current loop circuit. The barrier device has a conductive housing with at least a first and a second aperture and a pair of conductors passing through the first aperture of the barrier device, for connecting to a terminal block in the transmitter. A pair of signal terminals, preferably as ring tongue lug, is mounted in the second aperture of the barrier device. The signal terminals are connectable to a handheld communicator, which is used to calibrate, monitor and test the transmitter. A barrier circuit is mounted in the housing and is electrically connected between the signal terminals and the conductors. Signals from the communicator access the terminal block through the barrier circuit, and the barrier circuit limits the power available at the signal terminals. One embodiment of the barrier device has a third aperture directly across from the first aperture. The first aperture threadably connects to the transmitter, so that cabling from the transmitter can pass through a passageway formed between the first and third apertures. Another embodiment has a stub shaped housing, with one end of stub being the first aperture, and the other end being the second aperture. The first aperture threads to the cabling aperture on the transmitter, and the barrier circuit is potted in the stub shaped housing.

The transmitter comprises a sensing means which has a sensor responsive to a parameter to be sensed by the transmitter and an excitation means which provides an excitation output to excite the sensor. A threshold detection circuit is coupled to the sensor output and provides a detector output representative of an undesired change in excitation output which can produce a sensor output not substantially representative of the sensed parameter.
