A system and a method for controlling a steering position of at least one rear wheel of a vehicle are provided. The vehicle has both a brushless electric motor with a plurality of electrical phase windings and a steering actuator. The brushless electric motor has a rotor configured to drive the steering actuator. The steering actuator is operably coupled to at least one rear vehicle wheel. The method includes determining a desired voltage value indicative of about one-half of a peak-to-peak voltage to be applied to each of the plurality of electrical phase windings of the brushless electric motor based on a desired rear vehicle wheel steering angle and a measured rear vehicle wheel steering angle. The method further includes determining when the desired voltage value is greater than a threshold voltage level. The method further includes calculating a phase advance angle based on at least the desired voltage value and the threshold voltage level. The method further includes phase advancing a plurality of voltage waveforms applied to the plurality of electrical phase windings, wherein each phase advanced voltage waveform is phase advanced an amount substantially equal to the phase advance angle, wherein phase advancing the voltage waveforms increases a speed of the rotor at a desired torque to thereby increase a speed at which the steering actuator moves at least one rear vehicle wheel toward the desired rear vehicle wheel steering angle.

The controller includes a power device, such as a power transistor, electrically connected to the motor to variably provide electric power to the motor as needed. The controller also includes a gate drive device electrically connected to the power device for regulating operation the power device. A shutdown mechanism is electrically connected between the gate drive device and a power input. In the event of a fault, the shutdown mechanism isolates electrical power from the gate drive device. This prevents the power device from providing electric power to the power steering motor.

An electric circuit board has a current trace thereon and a notch in the edge and an opening therethrough on opposite sides of the trace. A magnetic sensor is retained in the opening; and a flux member retained by the notch and opening forms a magnetic circuit around the current trace to concentrate current induced flux through the magnetic sensor. The flux member is made of a ductile magnetic material and is therefore easy to manufacture and handle without breakage compared to prior art ferrite flux members. It is also resilient so as to permit a "snap-on" design for ease of assembly with positive retention of the flux member on the board and of the magnetic sensor within the opening with minimal series air gap. The flux member further has high internal eddy current and hysteresis losses for inherent high frequency filtering to reduce aliasing distortion in sensor output to digital apparatus when applied to a measurement of PWM motor current.

Disclosed herein is a method and system for initializing a rotating device such as an electronically commutated electric machine. The system comprises: an electric machine; a position sensor subsystem operatively connected to the electric machine configured to measure a position and transmit a position signal to a controller. The controller executes a method initializing position for the electric machine, the method comprising: establishing a sensor subsystem datum indicative of a measurement reference point for a sensor subsystem; obtaining a calibration value corresponding to a distance to a selected magnetic reference position for the electric machine, relative to the sensor subsystem datum; and measuring a position and calculating a position delta relative to an initial reference. The method also includes: estimating an offset from the sensor subsystem datum to an initial reference; determining an absolute position estimate of the electric machine relative to the magnetic reference position. The absolute position estimate is responsive to the calibration value, the position delta, and the offset from the sensor subsystem datum to the initial reference.
