摘要:
Embodiments described herein are directed to managing elements within a notification area of a graphical operating system. The elements may include any graphic, logo, or image associated with running software. A user indicates which elements can be displayed in the notification area, consequently creating a list of potentially displayable elements. For each listed element, an order of display, file location, and display status is designated. The user may freely change the order in which elements are displayed in the notification area by repositioning the displayed elements. Elements may be permanently removed from the notification area, resulting in their deletion from the list. Only elements entered into the order list, at the discretion of the user, are displayable within the notification area.

A user alert system is described that provides multiple dimensions of information to a user through a status icon. Initially the status icon displays a neutral state that informs the user that the user alert system is running, but there are currently no relevant alerts for the user to view. When the user alert system receives a lower priority alert, the system determines if the number of lower priority alerts received exceeds a threshold. If the number of lower priority alerts exceeds the threshold, then the user alert system modifies the status icon to display a low alert state. When the user alert system receives a higher priority alert, the system modifies the status icon to display a high alert state. Thus, the user alert system displays both the existence of alerts and the priority of the alerts to the user at the same time.

Methods and systems to provide a user tile to a user of a computer device relating to a logon process are provided. In one aspect, the user tile is configured to supply feedback to the user regarding the status of the logon process through a graphical representation. In at least one embodiment, the user tile may be individualized to a user or a class of users. Further aspects of the invention relate to methods and systems to select and display a user tile comprising graphical representations to provide feedback to a user on the method of logging on the computer device. In one embodiment, a plurality of user tiles are used to provide feedback to the user. In one such embodiment, one tile may be used to provide feedback on how to log on to the computer, while one or more additional tiles may be used to provide feedback on the status of the logon procedures for different applications.

An application status system is described herein that informs the user about application-specific status updates and notifications through a changing status icon associated with an application-switching user interface displayed by an operating system when the application is running. When an application has focus, there is typically no way for another application to display status to the user without displaying a dialog box or a notification balloon that interrupts the user. The application status system takes advantage of the existing application-switching user interface to display a lightweight status icon overlay on the application-switching user interface itself. Thus, the application status system allows applications to provide application-specific status updates without interrupting a user's activity in another application and without adding additional UI for a user to process.

A method and medium are provided for enabling reliable indication of the amount of time a battery will provide sufficient charge to power a computing device. In one embodiment, the time interval that lapses from the charge draining from the battery between two thresholds is determined, and the thresholds are adjusted based on the time interval. Other embodiments provide for classifying a battery as no longer capable of maintaining sufficient charge by comparing the maximum amount of charge the battery could store to the current maximum amount of charge the battery can currently store. Another embodiment determines how long a battery will provide sufficient charge to power a computing device based on profiles of user activity and associated battery drain rates. The current amount of charge stored in the battery is divided by the profile drain rate to determine how long the battery will provide sufficient charge to power the computing device.
